Yay, go your mom! My mum breastfed all four of us kids for quite a while, I think. But she has no sympathy for the struggles I've had with it. Her words: "well no one showed me how to do it, I just did it". Ha. She is lucky.

My mom didn't breastfeed me or my older sister. She was a very young mom and she didn't have the resources/support back then to learn about breastfeeding. However, she breastfed my little brother and sister is very much an advocate of it now!

yup i was bf til i was 1, pretty sure she kept going until i self weaned.

Nope, but Im no worse for wear. My mom is a self employed business lady and had to go back to work after only 3 weeks. Her sacrifices make me super proud of her, and grateful that our Canadian maternity leaves have been extended so much this generation for me to enjoy a full year and hopefully bf!

nope, my mom said her milk never came in due to some surgery she had prior...i don't know the exact details. with my older sister she said she just didn't want to but was going to try with me and couldn't.

My mum didn't try to breastfeed. She just didn't want to, I don't think. She maintained for years that she couldn't because she was diabetic but she told me recently that she actually decided not to try because she didn't like the sound of it.... The support wasn't there, though, I guess in the early 80s.

I give my mom major credit - she breastfed me even though I developed jaundice and had to be in the hospital on formula for a week (I guess in case I had breastmilk jaundice). She had to pump and she said I had a hard time switching back to the breast. She doesn't remember it being painful at all though like my sister and I experienced. I'm fortunate that both my mom and MIL are very pro breastfeeding and very supportive.

No, my mom has some anxiety problems and without any support, she wasn't able to bf my older sister, so didn't even try with me. She's so supportive of it though!!!

@HLK208: You could be my sister! All four of us girls were breastfed until 2-ish. And since she had a kid every two years, she was often tandem nursing a toddler and an infant. Pretty much every picture we have of my mom during that decade she had somebody attached to the boob. I don't know how she did it!

Yes! For a year!!! Which I guess was semi unheard of at the time, most women were FFing..... I also just heard a funny story about my mom nursing right in front of her rather uptight brother and he told her to go into the other room and she refused! Go mom!

yup. neither my brother nor i ever had formula & she donated milk to a milk bank. she's a nurse and very pro breastfeeding

My mom didn't BF me, she did with my older sister for a while, but I think sis was FF by 3 months.

My mom BF me and my 4 siblings! I'm assuming it was about for a year each, though I never asked specifically. I don't think she gave any of us formula at all. She never pumped though, since pumps were so crappy back then, so she was pretty much attached to one baby or another for a loooong time (obviously, she was a SAHM).

I don't think she really had any issues, from what she has said, so it was a little hard for her to understand when my sister and my SIL did. But she is very pro BF and very supportive of it.
