We were only able to watch episode 1. DH thinks it's too depressing, "fiction is less scary than real life". I thought it was super interesting!

I haven't watched it but my husband finished it all in two nights this weekend. Lol. He says I need to watch it.

I read that the documentary left out some key points from the prosecution.

Like he had called Auto Trader and used a fake name to ask for her specifically to photograph his van that day. He used a fake name because she had filed a complaint with Auto Trader that she had knocked on his door once when she was taking pictures before and he answered in only a towel and tried to get her to come inside.

I still think it's shady though.

In 2 days DH and I cranked out 8 episodes (sick kids plus extra long naps helped up out) and i CANT NOT wait until we can go home tonight and finish. Our daughters are staying with grandma tonight, she's our daycare this week due to closure and with a pending massive snow storm she suggested an overnight so they aren't in the car with bad weather tomorrow morning. Cue mom and dad relaxation night!

@lawbee11: We stopped last night after 8, and I'm so pissed off! I just know that the ending is going to be bad...and I"m doing my best to keep from Googling more information on this today until we finish!! 8 more hours

This is so crazy. I just finished it last night. It makes me so sad though

I found the interviews with Brendan especially heartbreaking.

This thread inspired us to start watching. We finished episode 3 last night. I am already assuming it doesn't end well.

I watched about 5 episodes before I gave up. It's so depressing and unjust, and I know the further episodes will just continue the downward spiral.... I'm not trying to ignore an injustice, but I know watching more episodes won't change much. DH watched it all.

I'd be REALLY interested to watch it again with my FIL who was a policeman in WI during this time (different area though.) He thinks Avery did it, but hasn't seen the documentary. I'm predicting he would at least be very upset about the police procedural flaws.

We just finished watching on Saturday and I've been reading the subreddit nonstop since. This whole thing is weighing so heavily on my mind! I'm especially disturbed by what went on with Brendan Dassey. This kid did not seem to have the capacity to understand everything that was being asked him (and certainly didn't understand the implications of his answers... He thought he was going to leave and go back to school after!). It breaks my heart that the system leaves kids like Brendan high and dry with "representation" like Len. Ugh!

The parts about Brendan's interrogations have me so depressed. I couldn't help thinking of my toddler, and it was just crushing and infuriating. More than anything, this series held me see how deep seeded some of the problems with the US's justice system are.

@artsyfartsy: this is what the prosecutor Kratz is saying and I'm not too inclined to believe anything he says at the moment. But besides the whole point is, even if Avery did it, there was enough tampering with evidence and changing the story that the jury should not have returned the verdict of guilty beyond reasonable doubt. Especially in Dassey's case, holy crap.

We just finished the series last night... and it seriously saddens me in so many different ways. :\

@MoonMoon: Exactly! I've been reading more into it since I posted this. He left the message in a different name...his sister's name because it was HER van that was being sold for one thing.

I just didn't want to jump on the OMGNOTGUILTY train right away before finding out what I didn't know yet.

Like you said, the bottom line is that it was a miscarriage of justice to have them convicted. There definitely was more than enough evidence to support reasonable doubt.

My friend just recommended this and said it was kind of similar to the first season of serial and she's totally hooked.

I can't wait to start watching!

I'm about 3 episodes away from finishing it. I watched it yesterday while addressing Christmas cards (yeah, it's been busy lately). I was seriously depressed that I had to stop watching it.

I was in graduate school/just out of school when the Teresa Halbach murder happened. I have vague memories of the press coverage of this in Milwaukee. My mom is in the camp that Stephen Avery did it without question. I think a lot of that comes from the fact of how it was covered in Wisconsin. The prosecution press conference was a big deal back then. It really polarized the state of Wisconsin against Stephen Avery. I remember the newscast with the evidence found from the searches. I didn't realize back then how much access they had (Manitowoc County police) to the property. It was never really relayed to the press and most of Wisconsin. I remember firmly believing that he killed her back then. Watching the documentary, you can see so much of what was left out in the full story in newscasts.

As for Dean Strang, I have friends who had him as a law professor. We're all swooning from FB.

  27. MoonMoon

    pomegranate / 3392 posts

@twodoghouse: yes, I find Strang and Buting equally appealing! Espeially in contrast with Kratz, Len Kachinsky, the entire Manitowoc Co. sheriff's department, etc...who come off as skeevy beyond words.

We finished this last night. The more I think about it, the angrier I get. I understand why someone would point the finger at Avery (not that I agree with that logic at all) but how could you put Dassey away for that long? It makes my head explode.

We are on episode 5 right now...

I wondered if I would get DH into it...as a criminal defense attorney he can sometimes get "bored" with watching shows about what he does all day. And then sometimes he just gets annoyed with how other attorney's present something. But he is totally into it now.

We are only 5 episodes in (I think) but DH is just baffled and I am just crushed by everything with poor Brendan. Its just so sad. He said he had told his dad to watch it - his dad is a 35+ year criminal defense atty who is extremely involved in the "ethics" side of legal representation. After some of what we have seen he told his dad he better not watch it for fear his head would explode.

BTW - he told me last night that in Wisc (right? not Minn?) you dont take a bar exam...just graduate law school and can practice. Crazy!

  31. Greentea

    pomelo / 5678 posts

@Mrs D: Is that true? I didn't realize they still had diploma privilege. I lived in another state and you only had to graduate from the law school and not pass the bar, but they changed that in recent years.

  32. MoonMoon

    pomegranate / 3392 posts

@Mrs D: I think they said if you graduate from UW or Marquette, you don't have to take the bar.

  33. TemperanceBrennan

    pear / 1998 posts

@Mrs D: @Greentea: From what I understand, you only get diploma privilege if you graduate from Marquette or UW Law School. And then, it is only to practice in Wisconsin. If you go to a different school (in or out of state) or you want to practice outside of Wisconsin, you have to take the bar.

  34. cascademom

    coconut / 8861 posts

@TemperanceBrennan: @Greentea: @Mrs D: My sister in law went to UW Madison for her law degree and didn't have to take the bar about 10 or so years ago. My brother went to an out of state law school and took the bar exam in Wisconsin. They both practice in the state. Again, don't know if that's changed, but that's how two of my family members got licensed to practice in the state.

  35. Greentea

    pomelo / 5678 posts

@cascademom: @TemperanceBrennan: Yeah, I didn't realize Wisco still did diploma privilege, I don't have a problem with it!

  36. Mrs D

    grapefruit / 4545 posts

@Greentea: @MoonMoon: @TemperanceBrennan: @cascademom: So interesting...and appealing to attend one of those schools. DH practices primarily in federal court - which I think would require the bar no matter what...so doesnt impact him.

He made the comment when I asked how Brendans atty could be SO bad...I was irrate....

  37. ValentineMommy

I'm on the second to last episode. OMG. Brendan's trial....I can't. It's literally making me sick.

  38. MoonMoon

    pomegranate / 3392 posts

@Mrs D: Brendan's lawyer may have been bad, but I'd also believe it if it turned out he was working with the prosecution to secure a guilty verdict. So yeah, incompetent, or evil.

  39. .twist.

    pineapple / 12802 posts

@MoonMoon: Honestly, when you watch the video of Brendan and his lawyers Private Investigator, you almost wonder if they aren't involved with the state some how. What is a defense attorney doing trying to prove GUILT when they should be providing DEFENCE.

  40. Greentea

    pomelo / 5678 posts

@Mrs D: there are plenty of bad attorneys that have passed the bar! And other states had this practice as well, thought I think they have all changed in the last few years.
