We have more or less been in a groove with breastfeeding for about a month now. All of a sudden I'm having a lot of pain in my nipple when she nurses on the left side. The nipple is pretty white when she pulls off. I'm thinking its a bad latch but it's been all day and only in the left. What gives?

I had this (though it was earlier) and a lot of Bees recommended I take magnesium, which I think helped!

That sounds like vasospasms, which can be caused by a bad latch...the best way to address it is to fix the latch, but taking magnesium and calcium supplements help with circulation, which help the vasospasms as well.

@hilsy85: @Adira: I thought of vasospasms when I saw the whiteness. It just seems weird that suddenly her latch got bad in one side. Does the magnesium cause digestive issues? I've got enough of those already so I want to prepare myself...

@Foodnerd81: I noticed nothing different when I started taking them except I had less of an issue with vasospasms! Although it also got warmer here at the same time and I think part of my problem is the cold!
It could also be a latch issue. If she just went through a growth spurt, her mouth may have changed and caused her latch to change. When she comes off your nipple, is it pinched or flattened at all?

@Foodnerd81: I take magnesium every day for my restless leg syndrome and haven't noticed digestive issues.

When I had those symptoms, it ended up being thrush in my nipple (neither DS or I had any other symptoms). I took 250mg grapefruit seed extract three times a day for about 2 weeks and the pain went away as did the whiteness.

@Foodnerd81: I dealt with this a bit. Mine would hurt and be white like you describe and it was a bad latch. If baby is in side lying position while nursing make sure babys mouth is directly in line with nipple. If baby s mouth is behind or over nipple it caused pain. See if that helps!

@jh524: it started yesterday morning when we were nursing laying down. I was super tired and probably didn't get her positioned right.
@purrpletulips: I'm hoping it isn't thrush. We went to the ped last week bc I thought we had it but he gave her the all clear.
It's always something with babies. @Adira: I think she has had a growth spurt (she has certainly been cranky enough for one!) so that's probably part of it too.

Mystery solved- noticed a white spot on the painful nipple, a milk blister. Now on to treating that...
