I think it depends on the kind of touching it is. I know that keeping your hands to yourself is a big rule for the PK4 class my sister teaches. I would think holding hands and playing would be ok. But if a child is touching another child and it is unwelcome, I can see how they would get in trouble.

The only kind of touching policy I know about at our school is if child A is being touched/hugged/etc by child B and child A expresses they don’t like it – then a teacher will redirect child B to “make another choice” and to not touch friends right now. But, I know they often hug each other, and do so lots at pickup!

ETA: they do teach about keeping hands to yourself, and asking friends before hugging, but there isn't a ban or anything.

I haven't come across this in pre-school or daycare situations but both of our older boys elementary school has a no touching policy. I'm not totally sure what it is, but holding hands is off limits; I know because our middle child has gotten in trouble for holding a little girls hand.

I have noticed in DD's daycare they go through "no touching" phases when a kid goes through a biting stage. For example: DD had just gotten into hugging...one of the other kids in the room (who I have known since he was 3 mos) was near her and I said "K give E a hug" and she did and as she did one of the teachers corrected them and said "thats close enough - lets do something else". I was put off and annoyed at first. One of the teachers later told me that E was going through a biting stage so they were practicing no touching in the classroom.

Seems to come in stages...I wish they'd give the parents a heads up though so we knew!

my daughter's in a mixed age (6months-3 years) classroom and there is lots of hugging and gentle touching. like, yesterday when I was dropping lo off, a 2.5 year old was very sweetly patting the shoulder of a 9 month old who was crying. when lo started at 6 months last year, one of my favorite things was how sweet the older children were to her! so, a strict no-touching policy seems so harsh to me.
