I can't speak from experience because my LO is only 7 months but I have a friend who had similar feelings to you and she nursed her son until he was about 2.5 or 3. She had to wean him because she wanted to get pregnant again and she wasn't getting her cycle back while nursing. I don't think it was a huge issue because I think he was ready! She was definitely sad but she admitted she was more emotionally attached to it then he was and it was time to stop.

I'm still nursing my 33 month old. He still loves it. We are down to just 1-3 times per 24 hours now. At around 2.5 years, it started feeling not so great for me, so we've gradually stepped it down. I don't think there's anything wrong with it as long as you're both happy.

I think it's fine! I weaned my DD when she was around 27 months. She still liked to nurse once before bed and I didn't mind it either. The only reason I weaned at all is because I am trying for #2 and I'd had a couple losses and wanted to make sure it wasn't the nursing that was causing them. Otherwise we'd probably still be going strong.

It's hard. I don't think it's weird. I so want to stop nursing. My LO will be two in September. For me nursing is not fun I get plugged ducts often in one breast in particular. If I go off schedule for an hour or two sure enough I will get one. But I feel guilty if I were to stop because LO hates cow's milk. Everyone thinks I should wean him now, but he doesn't seem to wants to. Plus, i recently read about the benefits of nursing beyond infancy. So I think I'll continue at least until he's two. I think you'll stop when your ready or maybe your LO will decide and wean herself.

If the medicine is something really beneficial to you then yes, I would stop nursing to be able to take care of a health issue for myself.

My LO let me know she was ready to wean. At almost 20 months she was only nursing before bed, and I got to the point that I would have to ask her several times if she wanted milk. So I knew she was ready. One night I didn't ask her and just did the rest of the bedtime routine without it and that was it. She asked once or twice a week later but I said there was no more milk and she was fine with it. So she self weaned but I knew it was coming and really savor we the last few times.

As far as "getting my body back" it was nice to consider taking whatever medicine I wanted without worrying if it was safe, or having extra coffee, or wine... But I turns out I was pregnant anyway so couldn't do any of that. But I do agree that there is plenty of pulling and poking and clinging that my body isn't quite my own anyway.

I really wanted to try to nurse my son, after nursing didn't work out with my daughter. I planned on giving it a second try for years. But I chose to take care of my health, and I don't regret it for a minute, even though I was sad about it. I think my kids have been better off that way. But I'm not you and you have to do what feels right to you. As far as getting your body back, your boobs might be yours again, but let's face it, being moms of very young children means a good chunk of our lives are not really ours.

@anonysquire: My kids both prefer the same side, too. They always fight over who gets the left side, especially at naptime and bedtime! They will be two in May and I have no idea when we will stop. DH and I were invited to go on a kid-free vacation with some friends over Memorial Day, but I'm not sure what to do. Honestly, some days I am really over nursing two kids, but I can't figure out how I'd ever tell them no you cannot nurse anymore. I know, gradually and all that, but they love to nurse and it's so easy when we are sitting around the house and they want a snuggle. I'm nursing them both right now and thought of being done with it makes me so sad! They're going to be our only kids so once they are done, we are done forever!

My big girl was a complete booby baby but she surprised me with how gently the final weaning process was once she decided she was ready! She had been down to just one bedtime nursing session since midway through my pregnancy so at 3y3m we talked about swapping nursing for reading "special stories" and after a few days of thinking about it (and resisting the temptation of her new books!) she made the jump!

Have you checked out the meds they want to give you on LactMed or had a chat with an IBCLC about your plans? From what I understand, some Dr's just give out a blanket "no nursing" statement when there's actually only a minimal amount of risk when you're feeding a toddler and not a tiny baby.

About a month or so ago, I stopped waking in the night to nurse. Now we are just down to after waking up in the morning, going to sleep at night, and after I get home from work and throughout the day on the weekends. I say "just." I brought it up with our ped at her 2 year well check and she said if I want to keep going go, but if I want to stop I should probably take a vacation and take lots of Sudafed on vacation. I'm selfishly not ready to stop, but at the same time I am because this is probably the last baby. She doesn't show any signs of wanting to stop, but I am so tired!

I just weaned my 23 month old last week (she still asks occasionally but I haven't nursed for about 10 days now). I didn't want to stop until she was ready but my supply tanked after I travelled for work in January, and then I had a chemical pregnancy shortly after and it freaking HURT to nurse. I nursed through it but was over it, esp since she was only nursing for a few mins at a time anyway. I sort of can't believe we're done now even though it was my choice
