My lo is 7 weeks and still doesn't nurse for long periods of time. The longest she ever goes is 15-20 minutes. Most of the time she will nurse for only a few good minutes and she is done. If I give her a bottle of breastmilk she never eats more than 2-3 oz. She seems content after feedings but shouldn't she be eating more and nursing longer? She is somewhere close to 9 lbs now. Any thoughts?

I think that sounds normal. Do you mean 15-20 minutes per side? How do you know she is done?

At that age, my LO would only spend about 15 min total during each session, and about 3 oz if she had a bottle, so I think that sounds about right. Shortly after, she started finishing in about 8-10 min.

@Thehistoryofus: No, that's her total time. She will just keep refusing the boob. Sonetimes I try different positions with her but it doesn't seem to help. Lately she has been latching on good for a few minutes then stops so i stick it back in, she sucks for s few seconds then pushes it out with her tongue so i just keep trying and she does the same thing. When she does that she still seems hungry but won't keep it in her mouth.

@BabyBoecksMom: I'm assuming she is getting enough to eat if she isn't fussy then? She has enough wet diapers so I'm not sure what to think!

Maybe she is just a fast eater? What is your pediatrician saying with regards to her weight gain? because as long as she is gaining weight ok, I dont think it should be a problem

@Mrsbells: she wasn't gaining enough in the very beginning but has been gaining since. I won't know until next week at her 2 month appointment. I will be sure to ask about it. We went from the 2 week appointment to 2 month, seems like too long!

@amohror: that does seem like a long time between appointments. I have a 2 week old and we went for his first appt at 3 days then next will be 1 month and then 2 month but we are doing the vaccinations as suggested so if you aren't that may be why they aren't having you do a 1 month appointment.

They don't schedule a one month appointment. Huh.

@aMohror: We didn't have a one-month appt either. We had one at 5 days, one at 12 days, and his next appt is at 2 months, for his first round of shots.
From what I've read (from many sources) as long as she's wetting 4-6 diapers a day and seems satisfied after eating she should be fine, but if you're worried I'd call your pedi.

Your LO's eating habits sound pretty similar to mine. My daughter is also 7 weeks and like yours she only nurses for about 10 minutes at a time. We had a one month appointment last week and she is gaining weight as expected, up more than 3lbs from her birth weight. She is content and I feed her on demand so I just figure if she needs to eat more she will.

If she is happy I wouldn't worry about it much. Se may be a good eater or you may have a fast let down. You can always stop in the pediatricians office and ask to weigh her without an appointment.

Sawyer is a fast eater like that as well, when my milk came in he went to 10mins max per side (max 20 minutes total), now at 5 months old he is about 3 minutes each side (6 minutes total), and he is following the 50%ile curve perfectly.

My son was always a quick nurser and gained well. 2-3 ounces at 7 weeks (9 lbs) sounds completely normal. My guy ate about 2.5-3 ounces and weighed in at 9 lbs at 2 months.

My LO is a fast eater too. As long as your LO is satisfied and having enough wet diapers you are probably fine.
They don't schedule a one month appointment. Huh.
