We were just told to try nutramigen for DD2 (3 weeks old). If you used nutramigen, did your LOs issues clear up? How long did it take? Did your insurance cover it?

We did Nutramigen for 2 weeks solid at the peak of my son's colic and reflux because he literally didn't stop screaming for like 11 days straight. Then we did Nutramigen for another 2-3 weeks until we weaned back to breast milk. Our ped had him on it because she wanted to calm his system down and help get his new reflux medication to kick in without any possible foreign irritants. She said she didn't think he had a milk protein allergy, but that perhaps something in my milk was bothering him. So while he was on Nutramigen I went on a total elimination diet (I had been off dairy for weeks already at this point) and pumped/froze everything to try and give him later on once he'd outgrown the reflux. It DID help him. He didn't eat as well or as much at first (warning, it is the most disgusting tasting thing EVER) but once he got use to it he was a ton better within about 5 days. After the full 2 week course she said we could try introducing 1 bottle of "clean" breast milk a day and see how he tolerated it and within 2 weeks we were pretty much back on breast milk and 1 bottle of sensitive/gentle milk-based formula for supplementation a day. Our insurance did not cover it since its not one of those elemental formulas (Elecare, Neocate, etc.) so we just had to suck it up and buy it.

My first had blood in stool at 8 weeks. I quit dairy and continued to BF but ultimately put him on nutramigen at 4.5 months when it was clear that he was still having issues on breastmilk (occasional blood in stool if I so much as had a whiff of dairy). He did great and thrived on it....our insurance did cover it. It was a fight to actually get paid, but worth it.

WE used Allimentum but same concept, no insurance did not cover it (we fought and fought them for it) and it didn't help us but we continued to use it because it is what she kept down the best. Our issue wasn't MSPI but an esophagus disease.

We tried both Allimentum and Nutramigen with LO. Nutramigen made his skin issues and throwing up the worst it had ever been so neither worked for him. We ended up on Neocate. Insurance would not cover any of the three for us.

We did nutramigen starting about 12 weeks (after 3 weeks of food refusal leading to having to feed our LO exclusively when she was sleeping). Within 4 days she started eating awake! It was seriously a godsend. It still took a long time for her to take a bottle more normally (and she never really took it FULLY normally), probably because of the psychological damage of associating eating with pain. But it got her eating awake and willingly again so it worked IMO.
Insurance did not cover it for us (in Ohio they don't have to). The two cheapest places to find it were amazon and target. I monitored prices at both. Target runs sales on the 19oz cans every few weeks where if you buy 2 or 3 you get a $10 gift card. That was generally the best price if you caught the sale. Target also runs sales every month or so where if you spend something like $120 on baby stuff you get $20 gift card. And you can stack those. I stocked up whenever there were sales like that.
Good luck mama!

Not nutramigen, but my LO was on Elecare for 7 months. Insurance covered 70% once we hit our deductible. They covered 100% once we hit our out of pocket max. We thankfully, or not so thankfully, had already hit our deductible and out of pocket max (5k-whoof!) thanks to his birth and a hospital visit for fever at 6 weeks, by the time he started the Elecare at 7 weeks. So ours was covered 100%. My insurance - United - was great and easy.

@Ash: @ladybee: did your LOs cry while drinking it? She's crying while drinking it

@MrsH: he would fuss a lot more and it was a fight to get him to drink it. He only had 3 bottles before I had him at our children's hospital because he got so bad after drinking it.

@MrsH: awe, no he didn't. It tastes awful (well it smells awful). Maybe she doesn't like the taste? Poor sweet girl. I'm sorry you're dealing with this. I am too... again.

@Ash: yeah - the BFing/supply woes are continuing/repeating here and to add this is really depressing. Sorry you are repeating too.

@MrsH: We used it as a supplement, but for the most part I nurse my LO. We suspected that our LO had a mild dairy intolerance. So I pretty much illuminated all dairy from my diet and I gave him nutrimagen as a supplement and he seems to tolerate it well. Our insurance did not cover it but enfamil does offer rebates for them, make sure you download the rebate form first before purchasing the formula because you have to buy the formula within 30 days of downloading the form. If you purchase before you downloaded the rebate form it will not be valid. See if you pediatrician can give you samples, ours gave us a bunch. Also, target sometimes has promos like if you purchase 3 containers you get a ten dollar giftcard.

@MrsH:@Ash: nooooo! I'm due in February and I'm so afraid of all this happening again.

@ladybee: I used nutramigen and removed dairy and soy from my diet for bfing my first baby, and he was super sensitive until he outgrew it around 18 months. Our second baby is two and ebf and dairy doesn't seem to be an issue this time around (so far!).

@ladybee: it was my fear too... I haven't had dairy in 2 (or 3) weeks and it's helped. I'm hoping to avoid neocate! And I'm hoping you can too!
