LO is 12 weeks and on Isomil but is starting to show signs that he might be having a reaction. For example, he's developed eczema and it's spreading, a weird rash (that is cleared with destine) and occasional projectile vomiting. How would I know if he needs to switch? Our ped said that 80% of babies allergic to milk are allergic to soy too.

We tried both, and LO perferred Alimentum. I would see if your peditrician can give you samples to try to start of both, that helped us decide. I was pushing for Nutramigen since it was slightly cheaper, but didn't agree with her. Both are expensive, so I suggest having all your family sign up for coupons, it was a great to help save on money! Good luck!

@LuLu Mom: Your babe is MSPI, right? I'm getting tired of the MSPI diet, so I talked to my doctor about slowly switching to formula and she said Alimentum would be fine for LO, but I did a 2 day trial and she had the worst bloody diaper I've ever seen.
So what are my other formula options if she still can't handle Alimentum,?

I breastfed but we also dealt with food intolerances and would have used Nutramigen if we had ended up needing to supplement. For us the signs were mucus (and sometimes blood) in the stool, lots of spit up, gassiness, and rashes around her collar bone area.

@LuLu Mom: your ins won't cover it? I know a few people that had to use it & they've all had it covered by their health ins (with their prescription copay). It really is $$$!

@ladybee: My daughter had reflux bad, but she also spit up constantly. We were in teh doctor's office so much because she was not gaining weight (losing) so even though they didn't think she was MSPI we gave this formula a try because it was more sensitive.
@Anagram: My DD wasn't MSPI, she ended up having EE (an esophogaus disease) but Alimentum she was able to keep down better than any other formula we tried (or breastmilk.)
@mrs. bird: It wasn't covered no, we went back and forth with them for months but they wouldn't cover it. We spent about 300/month on fomula. YAY for that being behind us & for her being able to be on whole milk

@LuLu Mom: oh god, $300 a month?? jeeeez. I hadn't figured out the price since our doctor gave us samples for the 2 day trial. I *hate* doing the MSPI diet and pumping at work and was looking forward to ending it, but $300 a month is making me think about pumping longer. Ugh.

@Anagram: Our GI told us that if we wanted to switch to formula we could do either Aimentum or Nutramigen. He said some of the most sensitive babies still react to those so they have Neocate and Elecare. I think those are both prescription (not sure though).

@jodyblair: someone else mentioned neocate and elecare here on HB. We have an appt this Saturday so I'm going to talk to our Ped about it then.

@Anagram: For the last few months when she was eating 24 oz. a day yep! Around 60 bucks a week (2 cans a week) We joked that it was like a car payment that we were spending on formula!

@Anagram: There are elemental formulas Neocate and Elecare. You usually have to order them from a pharmacy, DME or direct from the company. Some insurances will cover part or all of them. They are also super expensive. DS is on Splash, which is a toddler RTF "medical food" from Neocate. It ranges anywhere from $4.50-$12 per 8 oz box! Luckily our insurance covers a large portion of it.
The elemental formulas have all the proteins broken down into individual AA's making them (in theory) hypoallergenic and super easy for baby to digest. Aimentum and Nutramigen are hydrolyse formulas where the proteins are only partcially broken down into smaller chains, making them easier for most to digest, but is also why some still can't tolerate them.
@jodyblair: You technically do not need a perception to purchase them. Anyone can buy them directly from the company, however if you want to submit it to your insurance you do.

@LuLu Mom: yay for whole milk! That's awesome!! I hope things are going well with EE. We've been able to add so many foods recently to our FPIES LO (and ironically starting the journey again with our NB).

@ladybee: Sorry you are going through is. The best thing to do, if you suspect your current formula isn't working, is just to pick one and try. Your never going to know which one works for your LO until you try. Every LO is so different when it comes to these things that what works for many will not work for some. Good luck!
