Hi ladies! I am currently breasfeeding and pumping my 5 week old. Two days ago I began to have severe burning in my right nipple during and after his feeding. I brought him to the PED bc they wanted to see him for thrush after I spoke to a lactation consultant and she said it sounds like it. I will be seeing her tomorrow to confirm, but now my breasts overall hurt moreso than just the nipple area. My PED prescribed Nystatin, but was not convinced it was Thrush. He saw a little white film in there, but DS always has some leftover from drinking. I am nervous to give the medicine as it is given 4 times a day and I feel like it is just too much. Does anyone have any experiences with it?

I used a nystatin ointment for a yeasty diaper rash that my DS had around 4-5 weeks old. I also had a severe burning in my nipple when I was nursing him then. DS never had thrush in his mouth, just the yeasty diaper rash which the pediatrician thought had to do with why I was having the burning sensation when nursing. I asked my LC about what to do about the burning and she told me to use the nystatin on my nipple after nursing and after a few days that cleared it up for me and my DS's rash went away with the cream also. I hope you can get it figured out and that you and yours DS get better!

yes! we were treated for thrush a couple weeks ago. I was on diflucan and LO was on nystatin. I actually followed bottle instructions instead of pedi because you're supposed to both be treated at the same time - and with my rx being 15-day, and her's only being 10-day (and that was 3x/a day, not even 4) i wanted to stretch it out.
it didn't bother her, it was just a nuisance because with thrush, you have to sterilize everything after one use to make sure you get rid of it. So you have to do 1ml in each cheek but you don't want to contaminate the bottle - so I put 2ml in a dixie cup, and then used that. so after each dosage (both cheeks) I had to wash and sterilize the syringe. also, it's really sticky.
make sure you sterilize pacifiers, breast pump parts and syringes/droppers EVERY night until it's gone to be safe. wash all your bras in hot water and dry hot (my OB actually advised to boil them, but who has time?). same with things your LO's mouth touches - I went overboard maybe, but wanted it gone! I washed all of her laundry, and mine, on hot with a splash of vinegar. make sure to change bra pads after every feed/use. don't use the reusable bra pads, toss those if you've used them while you may have had thrush.
hang in there! it's a total PITA, but it'll go away eventually!

make sure you're both being treated at the same time, not just one of you - or you will pass it back and forth!

We were on Nystatin since we've had problems with thrush for a while. It was hard to give it to her four times a day honestly because she didn't like it. It didn't help when she took it anyway. Her doctor prescribed Diflucan, taken once a day, so we'll see how that goes.

hmm - I'm wondering now, I got her nystatin through target pharmacy and the bottle said it was fruit flavored. I wonder if that's why she didn't mind it? she only gagged when I pushed the syringe too quick and choked her, haha.

I had thrush but I didn't take any meds for it; my dr prescribed us gentian violet. It needs to be swabbed on breasts and baby's tongue once a day for 4-7 days. Much less invasive than meds - however it turns your boobs and baby's mouth purple for quite awhile!

My premie gets Nystatin every 6 hours in the NICU as prevention. He LOVES the taste of it! Don't worry about taking it even if you actually have something else. You'll see benefit soon or you'll need to go back anyway.

@mrs.pen: did it matter how much time happened between when you swabbed and when you nursed? DS is sleeping about 6hr at night so I was thinking of swabbing after his last feeding before bed and hoping that it wouldn't turn him purple because of the time lapse. Another option for me would be to apply immediately after morning feeding since I pump at work and would have about 10hr between application and nursing. Thoughts?
