I had my monthly check-up with my OB today and I asked him about doulas. He couldn't recommend one because it is only every 2-3 years that a patient of his works with a doula. Wow, I was really surprised about that. He said that is open to me having one but his advice was to save my money. So....that was interesting!

just because his patients don't use them doesn't mean you can't! i'm going to check in with my OB next week and ask them about their experience as i've already hired one and i want to get an idea of how they work with natural childbirth and helpers, etc.

Weird that he made the comment to "save" your money. It's almost like he discourages it.

@Alivoo01: I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of OBs discourage/dislike doulas. One main reason people say they like having a doula is because the doula helped them make decisions about the doctor's suggestions. While many see that as advocating for the mom, the doctor likely sees it as the doula undermining his expertise.

@Alivoo01: @MamaMoose: he did also mention that the labor nurses at the hospital dislike a bunch of doulas. I think those are the people that really count. I barely saw my doctor at DD's birth but the labor nurses were there the whole time.

it really is luck of the draw though when it comes to labor nurses. i had such a bitch the first time, and a nice one the second time. it made such a big difference in my experience!

@Mrs. Bee: yeah, what if I find a great doula but then the bitchy labor nurse ices her out like my OB said? that would be a huge waste of money. totally luck of the draw.
