My LO is 10 months today (omg!), and she still doesn't have any teeth! As much as I lurrrve her gummy smile, I am really struggling to figure out what to feed her other than purees . . . I worry so much about her not being able to chew something without any teeth! She has a great pincer grasp (she has been practicing on puffs!), and I can't feed her eggs because she had a skin reaction to them the first time we tried. Suggestions?

They're pretty good about gumming soft fruit like bananas and pears or steamed veggies like carrots or broccoli.

My LO has four teeth, but she really isnt liking finger foods. Im worried she isn't eating enough or getting enough nutrients. She does the whole smushing soft foods in her hands too and she doesn't get a lot in. What she does get in she usually spits out! We're still doing mainly purees for now.

@yellowbird: It took a bit of practice for LO to be able to get puffs in her mouth consistently. But now, she loves to eat them. I also worry about a lack of variety in LO's diet . . . *gah*

@MsLipGloss: lo is a pro at puffs and loves them. I think she had a texture issue with other foods. I feel like this will be a stressful area of parenting for a long time to come!

Despite not having teeth, babies can be good eaters!

We're having this problem right now! LO is 9 months and has no teeth. I've tried avocado, bananas, puffs and cheerios, and he gags on everything. I just talked to the pediatrician about it, and she said some babies just aren't ready for textured foods just yet and not to worry about it.
But...avocado was great to mash up chunky...he just totally tasted the chunks and gagged immediately! Hopefully, your LO doesn't have as much trouble!!

My LO got his first teeth at just under a year, and still only had about 6 teeth by 18 months. We just gave him really small pieces of things (chicken, cooked veggies, all sorts of hummus type spreads, bread, hard boiled egg, avocado, pasta, etc.) and he managed to gum them just fine. Also, I would whirl his food around in the food processor for a few seconds to make it chunky but manageable (for example, steamed carrots, mashed potatoes and chicken all together).
FWIW now at 2.5 years he still doesn't have all of his teeth (12 fully in with 4 new ones slowly making their way), but manages to eat just about everything we give him.

@MsLipGloss: You would be really surprised at how well they can gum up food. Just about anything short of red meat will work for her. Good luck!

My brother didn't get teeth until 14 months and our pediatrician told my mom to feed him whatever because thats how old people eat!
I would go ahead and just give her what you want and carefully observe!

E didn't get teeth until 10 months and didn't get any top teeth until he was 12 months. He could gum up just about anything as long as it was soft enough. Steamed veggies, soft fruits, tender pieces of meat. There is still bone behind that gum tissue, so they can really mash stuff up.

My LO was also still toothless at that time and her first two teeth didn't come in until 11.5 months! Now at almost 18 months she still only has 7 (bottom 4 and top 3). We just steamed foods extra soft and gave her porridge or soft chicken noodle soup. Now I pretty much give her anything as long as I know she can gum it and chew it with her front teeth.

My LO just turned 10 months as well, and we are going through the same thing since she has no teeth and is not amazing at chewing. What has helped though is making sure to give her one finger food with every meal so that she gets the practice, she really is getting better!
Foods that have worked well for us - shredded cheddar cheese, graham crackers, mushed peas, corn, crumbled bread or muffins, and the Gerber "Crawler" foods - like yogurt melts and crunchies (which are basically baby cheese doodles!). The Gerber stuff for that stage are really the perfect size and consistency for her to feed herself with, I wasn't expecting to be such a fan

I would try soft foods that she can gum. Ex: Avocado, Bananas, Steamed Veggies, Yogurt, Cottage Cheese, Shredded Cheese and anything that can melt in your mouth.

Mine had no teeth for the longest time!! She's 15 months and only recently got her upper two.
Mine still ate lots: noodles, steamed veggies (carrots, broccoli, peas, spinach), congee (great way to mix in veggies and meat), pancakes, blueberries, tofu.

A friend's LO didn't get teeth until after 1, and she fed him normally. He figured it out.

It is really soft if you don't cook it too long. I try different sauces on top to mix it up and challenge her taste buds (ie, tomato, pesto, chutney, etc).

We don't chew with our front teeth anyway, so all babies chew with their gums until they get their molars. Your LO just won't be able to bite off, say, a piece of bread, but should be able to eat everything any other baby can eat.

my 10 month old only has his two front bottom teeth (which aren't used for chewing) and he eats just about everything.

Two teeth on LO currently. We've given him small chunks of avocado, kiwis, bananas, thicker congee cooler with veggies like carrot, greens, meats diced very small, breads, tried small pieces of macaroni, and cooked rice, cooked broccoli. He eats whatever we put in his mouth except apples. He hates apples!
They can eat a surprising amount of stuff. Just stay close
To them if you are unsure and make sure it truly is a size they can gum and swallow and cooked soft enough.When My daughter was a few months she choked on a small piece of broccoli and I had to do the Heimlich on her. But she's also not as slick of an eater as her brother is.
