Did anybody else see this on NPR?
"And just 10 percent of women know the optimal time to try each month to get pregnant. A remarkably low number of women are aware that you have to have intercourse before ovulation to get pregnant," Illuzzi tells Shots. About 60 percent (including myself) thought the best time was after ovulation."
Congrats guys, looks like we in the TTC boards are some of the most knowledgeable women around when it comes to fertility!

Well, considering 50% of women get knocked up on accident, no surprise 
. I doubt I would've known that if i hadn't been TTC!

I think this makes sense. While I understood there was a small window where you can actually get pregnant, I had no idea it was so short, when the best times to BD are and all the things that need to go perfectly right in order to conceive. I think many couples have this simple "we just need to have sex, right?" approach to TTC lol!

I absolutely didn't know that before we started TTC. You know, in movies and on tv, you always have the wife telling the husband he can't go out or do anything because "I'm ovulating!" So that always led me to believe that you had to have sex ON THAT DAY in order to capitalize! I also had no idea that your fertile period is really only about 10-14 days out of your entire cycle.

@pui: That's what I thought too! Esp when I do hear a lot of stories about people just getting pregnant. But then again, most cases I don't know they are TTC or not!

I have learned so much during this past year TTC.
And I am with @pui: I don't think many people realize how small that window is. Or think the egg needs to be there to fertilize, not have sperm there waiting for the egg.

I knew nothing before we started reseraching it. I was in the clueless group thinking you could get pregnant whenever you wanted

@Crystal: sigh, just like in life the woman has to wait for the man.
I know some couples who have sex almost every day when TTC. Thank goodness for information because i don't know if i could handle that.

What amazes me is how we get two years of sex ed at high school, yet learn basically nothing about how our bodies actually work... Wouldn't that be relevant too?

This doesn't surprise me at all.
I went to catholic grade school. We had reproductive education in 7th grade. We read bible excerpts that made no sense to a 12yo then met with someone who was organizing the march in DC.
We touched on sex ed in my 10th grade health class but all I learned was "if you have sex you can get pregnant, an std or aids. Use condoms."
I basically knew nothing until it was time to TTC.

@SweetMamaM: Yes, this is completely amazing. I'm putting this stuff on my list of things to tell my hypothetical daughter when she's old enough - learn all about how your cycle actually works! Also there's that part in TCOYF about how this stuff should really be taught in med school.

I understood the basic principle, but I had no idea the window was that short. Put me in the "almost clueless" category 
ETA: My SO was 100% clueless. When I explained to him the concept of ovulation and when you can get pregnant, he was all, "whaaaa?! how do so many people get knocked up by accident??"

I WISH I didn't know all this crap I know about TTC. It would have probably meant I was one of the lucky ones that I didn't NEED to know and just had sex 2 or 3 times a week and got knocked up without having to know.

I'm surprised in general how little most women know about their cycles. I didn't know very much until I started charting, and once I learned it, I was amazed that I had never been taught it before! I mean, WHY isn't this common knowledge? It makes me rethink what I want to teach any future daughters about their bodies!
