Do they make a coconut oil fried sweet potato chip? that'd technically be paleo AND sounds delish
pomegranate / 3895 posts
@Coco Bee: I feel like paleo is entirely adaptable to the individual and his/her needs. Some paleo followers include nuts and seeds in limited amounts (limited because they tend to have not the best omega 3: omega 6 ratio, and seeds contain anti-nutrients), some don't include them at all. Whatever works for you is cool.
My understanding re: chia seeds specifically is that there's nothing really wrong with them in small quantities if (a) you like them, and (b) they don't bother your digestion, but that they shouldn't be looked to as a source of omega 3, as the form of omega 3 they contain is not very bioavailable.
Mark Sisson does a much better job on it than me! http://www.marksdailyapple.com/dear-mark-carob-psyllium-chia-seeds-and-vanilla/#axzz2B5xmIH7Z

Why did you start paleo: To be healthier, to establish a diet filled with whole foods so it'll be easier to raise LO that way and because of my own digestive issues.
Do you follow strictly paleo: No, I still include beans in my diet and I don't see that changing. I also definitely have cheat days when we go out to eat, etc. I try to keep my diet as full of whole foods as possible though.
Does your whole family eat paleo? No. My husband eats what I make for dinner but he loves his peanut butter and honey sandwich for lunch too much lol. LO is breastfed (3.5 weeks old).
Do you eat out: Yes but not a lot...only when we end up going out with family.
What is your favorite paleo recipe? I just made this paleo chicken pot pie last night and we all LOVED it! It definitely earned it's place as a cold weather staple in our house

@Mrs. Bee: @Coco Bee: the chicken nuggets are really really good. and i use thighs bc they are less dry. also, don't be shy with the dipping sauce
great snack suggestions! i'm going to check out those chips @Mrs. Bee. at least they're not fried in a seed oil.

Ooh I am so excited to see this!
Why did you start paleo: My husband told me about it and after doing a little research it just made so much sense to cut all the processed crap out of our diet and eat only real food!
Do you follow strictly paleo: I would say about 90%. We are a little lax when we go out because I know we can't control everything, but we still order burgers without the bun, but we may have french fries. Now that I am pregnant, I definitely made some concessions in the first trimester. I ate popcorn, rice and tortilla chips when I needed something really bland.
Does your whole family eat paleo? Yes and we plan to have a little Paleo cave baby!
Do you eat out: About once or twice a week. For lunch I usually go to the Earth Fare salad bar so that is easy to stay Paleo. If we go to dinner, it is usually as Paleo as possible. Meat with a veggie on the side or meat piled on top of a big salad.
What is your favorite paleo recipe? I have a ton, but the one we make the most is this...

Also, here is my pinterest board that is *mostly* primal/paleo.

Another recipe i love is this ragu. i put it over spaghetti squash instead of noodles though.
http://www.dinneralovestory.com/instant-dinner-party/
We also make burgers (no bun) every other week and top them with kale sauteed with garlic, oil and then goat cheese. it's so yummy!

@Running Elley: I like your picture of the pot pie better than the pic on the blog

@Coco Bee: Haha thanks The only ramekins I have are heart shaped for Valentine's Day so I decided to just make it a regular pie lol.

Why did you start paleo: to eat less grains and lose weight.
Do you follow strictly paleo: No. I'll be really good about it for awhile, then eat crappy for awhile.
Does your whole family eat paleo? My husband is Vietnamese so he has always eaten pretty paleo except for rice and ice cream. Lol. But he eats whatever I make for him, and LO just started solids, but I'm going to try to keep him paleo too.
Do you eat out: Yes, a couple times a month, but we try to eat as good as possible when we go out.
What is your favorite paleo recipe? I just made these fudgesicles that were sooo good!
1 can coconut milk
1/2 cup almond butter
3 frozen bananas
5 Tbs cocoa powder
Purée in a blender and freeze in Popsicle molds (or drink as a milkshake).
I'm also a big fan of soups!

Ok I am definitely not paleo, but try to to cook/eat mostly whole foods so I like peeking at paleo blogs, etc. (and this thread) because some of the recipes are fresh and new and don't have 'cream of chicken' soup or whatever!
But, I was piping up to @JoJoGirl to say I read in this book http://www.amazon.com/Chocolate-Lovers-Have-Sweeter-Babies/dp/1439183341 that first trimester folk are drawn to white breads, grains, etc. because they are/were the least likely to have spoiled or have bacteria (unlike meat, green veggies, etc.) so it was an evolutionary precaution! I thought that was interesting and definitely ate way more bagels, noodles, and breads than normal when I was in the first tri (and couldn't stand meat or greens).
I dont know the paleo rules to share any recipes, but wanted to share that everyone should look for a local meat store! Maybe I'm just stupid, but I'd never thought about it and stumbled on one right by our house. They have a ton of nitrate/preservative free sausages and great local options that are cheaper than Whole Foods.
nectarine / 2750 posts
@scg00387: I totally agree! I feel so lucky that we have a local farm that raises chickens, lambs, turkeys, cows and pigs so we can get farm-raised, grass-fed meat and eggs every week.
Applegate Farms is another good nitrate free, preservative free option for lunch meats, hot dogs, etc.
cantaloupe / 6206 posts
@scg00387: Fascinating, thanks!!! I feel less guilty. One question though, that someone asked in that Mark's Daily Apple comment section: how is it an evolutionary adaptation if those food items weren't available back then? Did they crave bread and then just say "oh well, this banana will have to do.."?
honeydew / 7687 posts
@jojogirl I legitimately have no clue but it is an interesting question! If I owned the book I'd look up what research she referenced and see if there were any tie-ins or follow up.. but I got it from the library I definitely would not feel guilty if I were you though, from my non-expert opinion actually getting food down and keeping it down is more important! I was so queasy at the smell of meat I left the apartment if my husband cooked it. If its any consolation, I felt more 'normal' around 15 weeks and had my normal eating habits back shortly thereafter.
(threadjack apology!)

YAY for this thread!
Why did you start paleo: To lose weight and feel better.
Do you follow strictly paleo: No, I eat dairy sparingly. I am also not worried about getting some canola oil, etc. in my diet because I eat out a lot. I'm more focused on not eating junk and staying gluten-free.
Does your whole family eat paleo? The hubs eats paleo with me for dinner because I cook, but otherwise he is very un-paleo.
Do you eat out: I eat out a lot because I don't always get a chance to pack a lunch, and we are Dual Income No Kids so we just like to eat out. It's not too hard to just get some yummy protein with veggies, though!
What is your favorite paleo recipe? The pumpkin paleo pancakes @mrsbee posted!
cherry / 110 posts
@blackbird: can you post the recipe for the scotch eggs? those look good to make for the week so we can just grab them for breakfast.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
They're so easy! Hard boil them, peel them, wrap sausage around them (a pound wraps about 5 eggs) and bake at 350 for about 40 minutes, turning halfway through. I like mine crispy on all sides and I like to dunk them in Dijon mustard
pomelo / 5093 posts
@Coco Bee: Oh no, it's a huge issue. My eating problems are one of the biggest issues I deal with. I've thought about how to frame them to my child in a way that minimizes the issue. One big thing I've done is not make it a 'your food my food' issue. I never deny her the food I'm eating, she always has a bite or more. And I never require her to eat anything, so we don't have power struggles over it. I know it's going to be an issue growing up.

Anyone cheat a little this weekend? We had a friend in town so of course we had to take him to all our favorite restaurants. I couldn't NOT have the barbecue chicken nachos last night! No grains, but plenty of other unhealthy stuff. And then today we went to our favorite family style brunch spot and had biscuits, half a pancake, apples in a syrupy sauce... the list goes on.
nectarine / 2458 posts
I do NOT follow a paleo lifestyle (I love me some carbs) but a friend of mine does and has an awesome website focused on that as well as natural parenting. Don't know if I'm allowed to post it here but since it isn't my site (and she isn't on HB at all) I figure it shouldn't be a problem... http://www.joyfulabode.com/
Monday is the day she usually posts recipes

@daniellemybelle: wasn't my best weekend. wasn't my worst for sure We have weekly pizza night on friday and it was grainy/cheesy goodness! And saturday I went to my inlaws and had lasagna and the shining moment was a hot dog for dinner at Costco.
Speaking of Costco though, I stocked up on some great snacking options! I bought chicken sausage, Cashew clusters (which are nearly primal except for the rice syrup, and they have a bit of honey...but for me that's good enough), guacamole and small peppers. Feeling good about this week! Also prepped breakfast by cooking bacon for the week.

I don't have a gym membership and have no real workout equipment in my apartment expect for weights, so I'm wondering, what's your favorite "paleo/primal" exercises to do in the winter? I really haven't worked out in aaaaaages and want to add this aspect to my PP lifestyle.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@phdmommy, i do crossfit and a lot of the work outs don't involve weights or anything besides your own body weight. They're short but they are brutal and high intensity.
pomegranate / 3895 posts
@phdmommy: I have a book that's all body-weight based resistance training. It's a pretty good resource: http://www.amazon.com/You-Are-Your-Own-Gym/dp/0345528581/ref=sr_1_8?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1352125195&sr=1-8&keywords=body+weight+resistance.
I combine my crossfit workouts with long walks a couple times a week, which are also a part of the paleo lifestyle (i.e. what's called "low level aerobic activity" in the Primal Blueprint). I still walk in winter, I just get all bundled up and head outside.

@Running Elley: I used to make this pot pie recipe all the time! We love it. Comfy Belly is one of my favourite cooking blogs. I just made her banana bread recipe this morning!

@blackbird: @hergreenapples: Thanks, I will check that book out for sure! I was under the impression that cross fitting involved lots of equipment, good to know I was wrong!

MMMmmm...found this recipe this morning and I think I'm gonna try it out next week (sans tofu or rice).

Hey all - How are you doing? I have been really loosening up lately. I'm doing good about no sugar and no gluten, but I have definitely had other grains/carbs like potato chips and corn tortilla chips. I've been bargaining with myself and slipping into my old "dieting" mindset - "Well, I'll just use PAM spray for dinner instead of grass fed butter to save calories, and make up for those chips..."
cantaloupe / 6206 posts
@daniellemybelle: I just ate 5 pieces of challah bread as a snack when I got home from work before I make dinner... so that's a good indication of how I'm doing totally regressed!! One of these days Ill get back on it.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
Um, yeah, I'm eating dark chocolate covered pretzels. We're having wings and a salad for dinner, though

I just now saw this and am so excited to join in! I started doing the paleo thing one month ago.
Why did you start paleo: to try to lose the baby weight. I usually eat "healthy" and was always more of a dieter who restricted meat, but ate cheese and healthy breads. I've always been able to control my weight this way, but 2 months post baby my weight hadn't budged for 6 weeks prior to starting. I have lost like 15 lb in a little over a month doing paleo.
Do you follow strictly paleo: No, I eat beans/legumes. I eat oatmeal in the morning to try to keep my milk supply up, but this is the only grain I allow. I don't eat any dairy except for greek yogurt. Oh, and after my initial 30 days, I introduced a "cheat" day in which I can eat what I want, but within reason...no binge eating or anything. I know mentally I can't give up pasta and cheese forever so this helps me stick to it.
Does your whole family eat paleo? No, but when DH is with me he pretty much does. LO is still EBF.
Do you eat out:
What is your favorite paleo recipe? paleasagna. Has Greek yogurt in it, but I leave out the goat cheese.

So my pregnancy cravings have been calling for vanilla ice cream and I found a Paleo substitute that, while it is no McDonald's milkshake, was pretty tasty! I have a crappy blender so I did have to thaw out the coconut milk and bananas before blending them, but the flavor was great!

@Navy_Mommy: I love Joyful abode! ... I have followed her on the Marks Daily Apple since before her first LO
Why did you start paleo: Issues with gluten/heartburn , but I had been eating a primal lifestyle naturally a while ago because its the quickest way for me to trim up- cut out the crap and stick to the basics
Do you follow strictly paleo: I eat potatoes from time to time and also some high quality dairy like hard cheeses, grass fed butter, cream etc
Does your whole family eat paleo? My husband loves meats, eggs and some dairy but I have a hard time getting him to eat any vegetables unless they are in soup! Boo!
Do you eat out: Only special occasions!
What is your favorite paleo recipe? I'm obsessed with bone broths, especially bisque For the season:
