If your LO is allergic to peanuts, do you tell the flight attendants? I noticed on one flight I had recently, there were no peanuts being served because one passenger had a peanut allergy.
Would you tell someone at the airport or your flight attendants about your LO's allergy beforehand so they don't serve that item on the plane?

Wow, I have never heard of that but I guess the last thing you want would be someone to have a bad reaction trapped on a flight?

It couldn't hurt to tell them. Hopefully LO won't have an allergy though so I wouldn't have to worry about it. Such a scary allergy!

@mrbee: Yup. I didn't mind but it did make me think a little bit. One person is inconveniencing everyone else on the airplane! They did offer snack packs and pretzels, instead though. So....what happens if someone who is sitting next to, in front of or behind that child eats peanuts that they brought on with them??

Yes, that's a good idea. A relative of mine is allergic and she started having trouble breathing when her seatmate ate peanuts and started talking to her.

Yeah I've heard of that, one case like @808love: says, where a child couldn't even breathe in air with any hint of peanut 'vapour' in it. Scary. I'd imagine it is only a matter of time before they're off the list entirely- air quality is poor enough up there without that as well!

I really think this is an American phenomenon, though. I've flown plenty of non-American airlines, and I've had lots of little bags of peanuts. Euros where I live don't seem to be at all concerned about peanut allergies, no idea why.
It would have to be all airlines banning them to make it work, which would be easier for parents. It also brings cross contamination into the forefront, because to be truly effective, it would have to be a ban of all things made in a facility which could also process peanuts. It's easier to ban all food on a plane, including stuff you can bring on or buy duty free...where does it end?

I imagine that you would have to let the airlines know at least a few days before so that they can stock the correct snacks. My LO has a class 4 allergy (based on a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being the most severe) to peanuts but luckily she doesn't seem to be bothered by peanut dust. However, there are many cases of people having anaphylaxis just from airborne exposure to peanuts.
Because of this, many daycare and schools ban children/parents from bringing peanut products altogether. It's a small inconvenience to keep at risk people alive.

@Red: Lots of schools here ban peanut products. I understand it but it is a pain.
