I've given Charlie cookies with peanuts and almonds in them before, not knowing they contained nuts. So far no allergic reaction, but it may take a couple of exposures before he has a reaction.
When did you feed your child peanuts/nuts for the first time?

Mrs. Bee- recent research in Dec 2010 edition of the Journal of Pediatrics recommend that the earlier you feed allergenic foods, the less likely your baby is to develop an allergy to that food. The study looked at egg allergies over a long period of time in a lot of kids.
We had problems with a milk protein intolerance at 4 months (not a true allergy, but just a colitis due to certain foods). We discovered at 8 months that Cecilia had a life threatening allergy to cashews and pistachios, and when we went to the allergist, he recommended that we start peanuts very soon so that she wouldn't also develop a peanut allergy as well.
If you are worried about a family history or a very atopic kid, I suggest feeding peanut butter about 30 minutes before your next well child check (just in case they have a reaction, you'll already be at the doctor's office). (Little pediatrician trick!)
So at 8 months we had introduced peanut butter just to make sure she was exposed and tolerated.
We're learning so much right now about allergens and the increasing prevalence of allergy in children (probably due to less exposure to infections-- so the immune system ramps up to fight non-infectious things and creates allergies... The whole theory is called the hygiene hypothesis)

One of my daughter's first foods contained peanuts (by accident). We did baby-led weaning when starting solids at 6 months. I gave her a pepper from my pasta, and then realized the sauce was a peanut tomato sauce.
We also did a lot of berry picking this summer. She would just pick the berries right of the bush and eat them.

I never new the rule about peanut butter and I have yet to feed Mavi fish. (I don't like fish so making it is not my forte) but after mavi was eating our food, i decided to give him a mini spoon of peanut butter. He didn't like it but no reaction what so ever.
Both the hubs and I aren't allergic (except I was allergic to disposable diapers when I was a baby) so I really hope he doesn't develop allergies.

we actually just gave a touch of peanut butter to em today. no reactions so we'll probably try a larger amount tomorrow. she's 18 months old and the pedi suggested we give it a go.
@blushink - funny, i was allergic to disposable diapers when i was little too!

Ok I'm bumping this way old thread from search because I'm thinking of feeding LO (8 months) peanut butter for the first time
@Mrs. Jacks: we'd heard the same tip at our CPR class to offer at the pediatrician's office. Do you think that's the best for the first taste? or the second or third? I've read too that the third ingestion can be the "worst" in terms of reaction.
We have no family history and I know he's probably gotten trace amounts from our fingers/kisses since DH & I eat loads of it.

@scg00387: I figured that Lala was exposed to cashews just from it being in the environment. Her first actual ingestion was anaphylaxis. So I figured if she had no signs on first injection of peanut that I'd be comfortable enough to do it a second time at home.
You could always do first exposure at the eight month appt and second exposure at next appt.

@Mrs. Jacks: Oh I've just been thinking about this recently. So if I give Vi peanuts (and other nuts) and she has no reaction, am I safe to give them to her at home or far away from the hospital after that?

@Mrs. Jacks: Thanks for answering so quickly! Yikes, that is scary. I'm thinking we'll wait until the 9 month well check for first exposure and then maybe just park in the parking lot at the hospital for another. I've been pretty laid back about feeding rules and allergies and stuff, but the peanut thing scares me silly.

@Arden: like scg says, it usually takes a couple of exposures to see the full allergy manifest itself... But given the ubiquitous nature of peanuts, I feel like you are very likely to see some reaction on first exposure. We felt comfortable to give it a second time at home.

I fed LO peanut butter on bread right before a doctor's appt i had (for LO#2) at the hospital when he was about 10 months old. I figured he had already had trace amts since DH eats peanut butter daily, but it was a nice peace of mind that we would be in and around the hospital for the next hour or two after ingesting his first pb sandwich! 
our family also does not have a history of any food allergies.

@Mrs. Jacks: with the study showing that earlier exposure decreases allergy development, does family history of food allergies make a difference? if it does, do you generally hold off on the specific allergens that immediate family members are allergic to or all common food allergy triggers? what about food allergies that the parents have grown out of but were present as children? sorry for the million parts to that question, i've just heard so many conflicting opinions, so i'm curious what your thoughts are!

We fed LO smooth peanut butter ... last Monday. So, just after 9 months, and it's seems to be fine (fingers crossed).
