I just read that powdered formula isn't recommended for infants under 3 months because it isn't sterile. We've been using free sample cans for supplementing - I had no idea about this! Our pediatrician never mentioned it. I am hoping it's not that big of a deal?

Never heard that! I used powdered formula for my son starting at around 2 weeks. We never had problems. He's 13 months now.

We did powdered when the ready to eat samples ran out... So maybe a few days old. food isn't sterile in general, and neither is breast milk. Just think of all the bacteria your baby went through to get to you, and you'll realize that sterile doesn't always equal better!

we used it starting at birth. my LO is almost a year.
my understanding is that it's only an issue for supper preemies and babies with weakened immune systems. -
I used powder at the beginning, then my LC told me it wasn't sterile and some mothers have found bugs in the cans (wtf?) I honestly think she was just fear mongering me into not using formula but I did switch to the concentrate liquid just bc it seems to mix better. It's not as expensive as the ready made but more expensive than the powder. That being said I wouldn't worry too much about using powder and would have no qualms about using it - my breasts aren't sterile either when she is bfing.

We supplemented for the first month of J's life and also used the free samples--I had no idea about this rule and he was just fine!

We used powder almost all the time once DD was eating at least 2 oz at every feeding and she turned out ok

That rule is only for premies or otherwise immunocompromised baboes, I believe

Whew, okay.
@Mrs. Jacks: I had a C section so she didn't get all that birth canal bacteria that's supposed to be good for them! I got probiotic drops for that reason... That I now can't find... Grr!
