How does your preschooler deal with shots? I told my DD that she would be getting a shot tomorrow, a shot that she needs in order to register for kindergarten. I thought I was doing her a favor but oh my she went berserk and is petrified. It used to be so easy when she didn't get what was going on... I shouldn't have said anything and should've just let her get jabbed without any warning!

My LO is only 22 months old and she already knows. I took her to the doctor the other day for a diaper rash and after finally getting her calm in the room waiting for the doctor I started to explain to her that the doctor was coming in and what she was going to do..... which was just look at her diaper rash. She started screaming!
But I still feel like it's better to tell them, especially for shots. Otherwise they'll freak out every time they go to the doctor thinking there will be shots when there really aren't.

@artbee: so true.. I don't want them to have a meltdown for ever doctor visit that's for sure...
I promised my DD a treat afterwards and said she could bring her lovey. So I basically resorted to bribery! -
This sounds so lame, but Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood had a whole episode dedicated to going to the doctor and getting a shot, this helped DD soo much! When she got her flu shot this fall she didn't cry, heck she didn't even flinch! That show brain washes my daughter, but in such great ways!

DS just had his 4 year appt and prior to the appt, I told him I wasn't sure if he was going to have a shot or not and that the dr would let us know once we got there. The dr sprayed on a numbing spray that he called "magic" and said it wouldn't hurt. Apparently, the spray didn't work and DS screamed bloody murder and was in PAIN. I am not looking forward to his 5 year appt, because now he is fully aware that shots hurt.

I told my son who is 4.5 years old that he was fog to get a shot but that I would be ok and them we would get a cake pop from star bucks. (I'm sorry to admit to the bribe) when the nurse came in he said. Mommy said I'm getting a shot and. Can cry a little when it hurts but if I stop and don't make a scene I can go t Starbucks and get a cake pop, even one with sprinkles. The nurse just laughed and said that's right. He got the shots, cried while he was getting them and stopped.

@T-Mom: My parents bribed us. If we were good, we got a present of our choice. For my sister's kindergarten shots she got her ears pierced. For mine I got a whole new outfit, including accessories. My brother did not behave so he didn't get anything.

My son's only 2.5 but I tell him honestly what is going to happen when we go to the doctor. So, there's a lot of Dr. O is going to look in your ears, maybe your eyes, listen to your heart, etc etc. I bought him a doctor kit so he can see what the equipment looks like, he loves his stethoscope.

We play doctor at home pretty much every day, and now DD actually gets upset if she DOESN'T get a shot! She cried at DS's 1 year checkup because he got a shot and she didn't. True fact! We play doctor so often, she just thinks shots are part of every visit and she expects it to happen. It (usually) works in our favor, lol!

@looch: @Honeybee: playing doctor actually sounds like a great way to make visits to the real doctor less scary! Must look for doctor kit, thanks for the idea!
@artbee: a whole new outfit would definitely motivate my DD too, I'll bet! That's an awesome reward that your parents gave you. -
@T-Mom: DD has been playing doctor for awhile at daycare as they have a kit there so she loves going to the doctor. Hope that helps!

@T-Mom: Just make sure you don't use the words my parents did. "You can have anything you want." They really didn't want my sister to get her ears pierced nor did they think she'd ask for that. They asked if she'd rather go to Disney World, etc. instead, but she only wanted her ears pierced.

Wow. I am a mean mama. My kid gets jack. We do have this for shots: http://www.buzzy4shots.com/ , and once she finally came out from underneath the chair she was a total trooper. She really likes the distraction cards, and didn't cry during the shots or right after or anything!

@Mrs. Twine: wow that looks like a really cool product. It makes total sense that pain is partly mental and that distractions would make a huge difference. I'm going to check it out! I didn't plan to bribe, but apparently that's the only strategy I had in my parenting toolkit when it came to that situation
