So I am just realizing that sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. There doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason to it.
Do you always get a second letdown or just sometimes?
Anything you can do to initiate it??

I've gotten a second letdown a handful of times in the 11 months I've been pumping. I wish I knew how to make it happen more often!

i think it depends on how much milk i have when i'm pumping. i never really paid attention and would just work while pumping, but i would get a second letdown. i just couldn't feel it like i can with breastfeeding!

I always get one around the 18 minute mark. I hit the letdown button on my pump 2-3 times per 25 minute session. Not sure if it actually helps.

I'm pretty sure I get one around the 12-15 minute mark. I always stop at 20 minutes, though.

I always had a second let down because I would wait for it before I would finish pumping.

Hmmm....maybe I am not waiting long enough. I usually stop at the 10-12 minute mark.
I got a second let down yesterday when I was not paying attention to the time so maybe I had been pumping longer??

@littlebittyhouse: I only pump 12-15 minutes and often get a second let down. I find that looking a pictures/videos of LO on my phone helps encourage it!

@yin: Same here. I don't stop pumping until I get the second letdown. It might not be much but if I'm pumping already it seems like a waste not to wait just a few more minutes to get everything I can out of the one session!
ETA: I try to really really relax when I think I'll be getting the second let down. And if I feel like it's been long enough, I will turn the suction down and the speed up on my pump to stimulate one (like the manual suggests - mine doesn't have a let down button/function).

@MamaMoose @lindseykaye i am going to try a 15 minute session this afternoon to see what happens.
do you do compressions while pumping too?

I don't think so, I get impatient and don't pump long enough for a second let down if i had to guess...

@littlebittyhouse: the breast massage/compressions always help me get my 2nd letdown faster.

I usually get one at the 15 min mark. I don't always have that long to pump though.

@littlebittyhouse: Yup, if I notice i've stopped getting good "sprays" I massage to get it started again!

Yes, always! It usually happens at the 20 minute mark, but sometimes it comes early (15-17 minute range) and sometimes not until like 25 minutes. I always wait for it.

I used to get 3 if I pumped long enough! First came right away, second would come after like 15 minutes and then a third around 18 mins.

@littlebittyhouse: I do pump for longer than I read most bees pump. Probably 20 minutes on average. And like @MamaMoose it definitely helps to look at photos of LO. Once I turned on a video of her in my early days back at work and BAM! Second let down right then.
I don't usually do any compression during pumping but I usually hand express a little into the pump flange right after I'm done to get just a teensy little bit more.

my left usually gets a second letdown and my right not so much. My left produces more than the right.
