I currently pump for 25min each session, however I seem to pump the majority of the BM during the first 5-10min of each session. Is it harmful to keep pumping for 25min? Should I reduce down to 15min or 20min sessions?

It definitely doesn't hurt and helps stimulate. I had to pump for 30-45 minutes each time and once I stopped getting milk to express by itself I would massage and use hand compressions in conjunction with the pump and then after all of that, hand express what remained after shutting off the pump.

My doctor told me there was no advantage to pumping for long periods. So in the beginning I only pumped 7 mins and now I pump about 9 or 10 minutes

I always pumped for 25-30 as well.. I personally think that perhaps I didn't find my ideal flange size, pump strength, etc. to pump most effectively, since 30 minutes seemed really long . But I basically pumped until I felt I had enough milk, which required 2 let downs.

I found after awhile I would get a third letdown at the 18 minute mark, so if I had time I would pump for 20. I never pumped longer than 20 minutes, though. Most of my milk was out by the 12 minute mark.

I pump however long it takes me to get 2 let downs. Usually 15 minutes but sometimes it'll take 25 minutes.

I pump for 15-20 minutes. I read that over time your body just becomes more efficient so you don't have to pump as long but I don't think there's any harm in pumping for 25.

Thanks, I usually get at least 2 letdowns and sometimes 3. I think I am going to switch to just 20min for awhile and see how my supply does. I'm thinking 25 may be a little too long because my flange size is correct, I'm using the lowest setting but my breasts are a little tender.

@Mrsbells: that's not right. More stimulation higher supply.
Most woman in order to maintain supply have to pump for approx 15-20 minutes. If you pay attention I get a 3rd down right around the 20 minute mark, so I go until thats over.

Not sure why, but it always took me about 30 min to finish pumping... and I only got a 2nd letdown if I continued pumping for another 5 min after that.

I just started a post, glad I saw this now. I usually get a third letdown within the 20min I pump. Sometimes the third comes at 15 min, so I stop then.
