We are just starting to interview nannies for when I go back to work, and I have a question about nanny interviews. Do you bring up compensation and all those issues in the initial interview? Such as what rate the nanny is looking for, etc.? I'm just wondering whether we should know what kind of "complete package" we'll be offering nannies (how many paid vacation days, etc.) before we start interviewing, or whether this is something we should discuss at a later date.

Well, I was going to post some of the posts Mr. Bee did, so I won't. What I will add is that I think you should have an idea in mind, but be willing to be flexible once you meet the right nanny. If the right one needs something a little different, hopefully you'll be able to compromise.

I agree with @MaisyMay to have an idea in mind, and then go from there. If someone wants $30 and hour and you were thinking more like $10...then that may not work out. I mean that's an extreme but it could still end a deal.

During some interviews as a nanny I have had some parents say something to the effect of "we havent finalized yet what we are able to offer yet but I want to make sure we are on the same page, what kind of salary / hourly rate are you looking for?"
I always appreciated when potential employers were up front about pay range at least because I went through an extensive interview process with one family only to find out they were barely offering minimum wage. I really liked them and would have taken the job had it been a good salary and it left both me and the family really angry.
I don't however think there is anything wrong with waiting until further in the process to hammer out details.
