If he goes to private school, this won't be an issue, as he will miss the cut off, and will thus be on the older side for his class. If he goes to public, I would not hold him back unless there was an obvious issue/it was strongly recommended by his preschool teachers.

When I moved here from HK (I was already in 7th grade), they wanted me to repeat 7th grade but I was like noooo! I'm a Nov baby and one of my good friend is in the grade but a year older than me and she's an Oct baby!

I'm having a Dec baby (praying for a sticky one right now!), as long as there is not cut-off, I wouldn't wait unless there are some serious/obvious challenges present.

In our county, the cutoff is Sept 1 (both boys are early/mid Sept), but you can apply for early admission if their birthday is before Oct 15th. I will probably apply for DS1 to get early admission, because I think it would challenge him more to be on the younger side than the older side. For DS2, since he was 2 months early and has extreme delays, unless something drastically changes I won't apply for him to go early.

However the cut off here is Aug 31st and with him being a Sept baby he missed the cut off and will start this fall (so making him the oldest in the class).

I am kind of glad though - he really wasn't ready emotionally/socially and I think he will do much better starting late

2 boys in DS's class with August birthdays did hold them back - I never see girls held back though!

My DS is an early September baby and the cutoff is 9/1. He will turn six just a few weeks after starting Kindergarten. As of now, I have no issue with that. But I'm definitely keeping my options open. I would have to keep him in private school until the end of first grade per our school district's rules in order to put him in early.

My DD is a late August baby and just makes the cutoff, making her the youngest in her class. We sent her to Kinder per the cutoff.

Our cutoff is 4 by Dec 31. We have JK and SK here in Ontario. LO was born Dec 5, so she'll be starting JK at 3 years, 9 months — and most classes have JK & SK together.

I'm not sure what we'll do. She's in daycare now with some older and some younger, and that split will likely continue as she moves up through the rooms, but I think we just have to see where she's at when the time comes!

L has a May birthday, but baby #2 is due in October, and although we'll see how things go, I think that I would rather wait until they're almost 6 to put them in kindergarten than have them start at just 4 years old. My cousin started kindergarten at age 4, and although she did okay academically, socially it was more of a struggle. She always wanted to catch up with the older kids and that was often not a great thing!

We're in the same place as @tinyperson: . In my heart I feel like 3 is too young, but hopefully we'll be living back.in the UK by then where you start school aged 4 so we don't have to make the choice. If we do have to decide, I'll have to look at where she is emotionally and intellectually and then see. I guess we'd also need to get her into a part time program before as she's home with me now so it might be a big shock for her.

My son is a Dec birthday and we have a Dec 31 cut off at the moment. I am certain he will be able to handle the academics, but I am not sure about his emotional readiness.

This September, he will be in a private preschool and we'll see how that goes. If I don't feel he is ready for public K, the school has a Kindergarten program and he will attend that. Then he'll go to 1st grade in the public schools.

My bday is Sep 2nd, and when I was little the cutoff where we lived was the 1st. My parents got me in anyway, because I was so advanced that I would have been VERY bored if I'd been held back. The problem is that in terms of maturity, I wasn't ready. I was always a little behind in maturity compared to my friends/classmates, and it occasionally caused issues. I don't know what they could have done differently, since I was genuinely too advanced to wait, but it wasn't in my best interests to start early either. I think ideally homeschool or something similar would have worked much better for me, but it wasn't an option.

I would only redshirt my child if the pre-kindergarten screening showed an issue that might resolve itself with extra time. There seems to be a recent phenomena of people redshirting their children so that they'll have an advantage in sports which I think is completely ridiculous.

Eta: I was born on Sept 29 and the cutoff for my district was Sept 30. I was always the youngest in my classes. I had no problems academically, though I was a little behind socially. Nothing that would stop me from sending my child on time, though.

@Mae: omg tell me about it re: being the LAST one to turn 18/21 in college....it was SO ANNOYING--I was literally the last one (dec. 31st birthday).

@Mae: @hilsy85: On the other side of the spectrum I told DH "Oh great - our DS will be the beer guy since he will turn 21 before all his classmates"

@mrsjyw: oh wow! our local school dept didn't have that info last i looked. i'll have to consider it once we are closer!

My birthday is 8/30 so I was one of the youngest in my classes and I hated being last to turn 16, get my license, etc. My son will be one of the oldest I guess, since his birthday is 9/28 and the cut-off here is 9/1. I think for him it'll be good since currently he has quite a few delays and I've heard for boys it is better if they are older in certain circumstances.
