I'm re-evaluating my budgets and thought about the holidays/christmas time. We have about 5 months to save for gifts and this is the first year we have a LO and a babysitter(daycare provider) so this is foreign territory.
My son goes to an in-home daycare provider and she is fantastic. What is the protocol, how much, or what do you give to your childcare provider around the holidays.
(BTW I'm thinking about this now so it won't be a strain come December and I'm nutty like that)

Last year, we gave our nanny a cash bonus that was a little less than one week of her take home pay. We also gave her the week between Christmas and New Year's off.

For our in home, gosh...I think we gave a $50 gift card and a basket of baked goodies?

ETA: Per teacher (she has two). We don't do gifts for the director. But then again, we've never had a director we particularly liked.

As for your DS just remember he doesn't even know its the holidays - so don't go all crazy on gifts for him - I put a few toys he already owned in his stocking for his 1st Christmas just to get some cute pics and then bought him 2 small things. The grandparents bought him tons!
As for DCP - I have 4 teachers and I usually do a $35 gift card for each along with a small gift.
If I only had 1 teacher I would probably do $75-$100 gift card

I think it all depends on what you feel comfortable with spending. Just because others spend $50+, don't feel like you have to do that too, especially if it's not in your budget!
Xander has 3 main teachers, so we'll probably give them $25-$35 each. Though last year I was a loser and didn't do anything for them so.... I know they'll be thrilled with $25, haha.

@Honeydew: we have a babysitter for R. She watches her own two children and R. We gave her an extra week's pay for Christmas. But R is only there for six hours a week.

Daycare center and usually around $20/teacher. There's usually 2-3 teachers.
Usually some cute way of displaying a gift card plus edible gift.

@Adira- Thanks for your advice. I thought in some sort of outer space rule book, there is a written rule about a week or 2 pay for holiday or anniversary gift?
Or maybe its a rich people rule ala Lincoln Park trixie (chicagoan's will get this.)

I think you give what you can afford. We gave 2 teachers $50 gift cards and the other $25, and one doesn't celebrate so I was told to not do anything for her. Then they all got Christmas treats I made. Along with the office workers.
This year she will just have 2 teachers and I will probably do the same thing: treat and Target gift card ($50).

@Honeydew: That is what people tried to tell me last year, too. But I really don't think it's true. I thought we could have given a lot less and still had it be a really nice bonus, but I lost the battle with my fellow nanny share mom.

@Honeydew: i can tell you i've never gotten two wks pay as a gift!! that would be pretty sweet though... is it just your LO that she watches or others too? i think if you're the only one gifting, the gift is usually bigger. as a nanny, the past couple years my gift has been roughly the same, a wk off, a bottle of wine, a pic of my nanny LOs and homemade gifts from the kids, and a couple hundred as a gift card to somewhere they know i like or as a check
