Yesterday there was a school shooting in a neighboring high school. Today at 5:30am we receive a call from local pd about a threat to our hs and middle school. They said it’s fine, they have the person and school isn’t cancelled but how can we send our kids to school like this?? What would you guys do??
Btw I already contacted my senators after yesterday’s events

Honestly probably today is one of the safer days to go to school bc the HS and MS will be crawling with cops.

@gotkimchi: I feel like my congressman and Senators are just barely restraining the urge to tell me to piss up a rope. But my state went 70% to Trump in the last presidential election.

IMO, you send them to school, because that’s what we have to do. And you pray or hope or whatever you believe that nothing happens. Today is no more or less safe than yesterday or tomorrow and you can’t keep them home indefinitely so you send them.

I so know what you mean. We are almost just so desensitized to this stuff and also have no choice; I still gotta send my kids to school, go to work, go to public places, etc.
Maybe you can find a local chapter for moms against gun violence or something like that? I know I am in one locally and once in a while they mobilize everyone to do something.

@gotkimchi: We live in the same area. That school is the high school my kids will go to. I'm somewhat comforted by the fact that the situation went as well as one of those situations can. Someone saw something and said something, the classroom was cleared, no one died.
But still... I'm so disheartened. The fact that this situation went so well is a testament to the fact that this shit happens so often that there are procedures. Procedures that are rehearsed enough to have been executed so well. I can't believe the 7th anniversary of Sandy Hook is this week and we still have nothing to show for it.

@kiddosc: yes thank god it went the way it did. But it also almost makes it seem like people will say see it’s fine! V with a large loss a life. I hope people r taking it seriously and like I said I’ve been contacting my reps but honestly waking up to that phone call at 5 in the morning about a reported threat really shook me. And it’s so wide spread, it’s been Waukesha, pewaukee, grafton, Germantown,Kenosha all with these issues! It’s so sad and scary

@kiddosc: I don't think I can look any of those parents from Sandy Hook in the eye. We have totally failed them as a nation for having nothing to show for it after 7 years

@gotkimchi: And another incident in Oshkosh today I don't understand how people don't think that gun legislation would work. You make guns illegal, or hard to get and maintain and the price on the street will go up making them cost prohibitive for most criminals.
Don't be like Wisconsin and make it easier to walk out with a gun in a fit of rage while your background check processes.

there were threats made at several schools in our area last month. it is scary.
I cried myself to sleep the night my kindergarten kid came home and told me about the active shooter drill they practiced at the beginning of the school year. He had no idea why they were hiding and being quiet. I have practiced these drills as a classroom teacher with my high school students and even the drills scare me (and many students). And now as a mom they are so much more scary.
