I don't have a child in school yet, but I randomly JUST had two conversations about school uniforms with 2 moms of boys in uniform because we're planning on sending our son to a private school and they were going on and on about uniform clothing and giving me pointers.

I do think a lot of this depends on your climate, how often you do laundry, and whether the shirts can be washed with the bottoms (i.e. dark polos and dark pants, or white polos with light pants, etc).

I live in Northern California and the climate where I live is burning hot between June and October, then rainy/cold/blustery from November through Marc. We have typical spring weather in April and May. Both moms told me their sons prefer a short sleeve polo shirt with a sweater or school hoodie over it if its cold, rather than long sleeve shirts, so they keep 3-4 of those around. (I'm told if you have the option of a darker shirt, that's the way to go for stains). 1-2 sweaters, and 1-2 long sleeve polos are plenty for our area. I was told to be careful with pants since boys are notorious for having those overnight growth spurts, so I was told to have just 2-3 pairs at any one time. Shorts are obviously more forgiving.

ETA: Both moms WOH, so that might influence the laundry/amount of clothing.

How expensive are uniforms?

I would probably just buy a ton of whatever and work it out but then it hit me that these clothes might be expensive and I have to think more about what I would get. (Kids not in school yet so kind of just feeling this out for future knowledge)

My coworker buys all her son's pants at Old Navy - he wears a slim cut and its the only place she can find them!

@MamaG: @gingerbebe: I was going to ask @yin: the same. What their colors are and if she can buy them from retail stores to save money! I know Target, Old Navy and TCP all sell "uniform" pants and tops!

@MamaG: yup, I just meant the bottoms because she did mention her school tops are embroidered.

@Raindrop: it depends. If you can just wear any khaki bottoms, no problem, but those plaid uniform skirts are 50-100 bucks a piece.
