I think it's incredibly naive to want to be the only person your child can talk to about sex. Many children feel awkward or uncomfortable asking their parents questions about sex. I hope our school provides an environment where my daughter will have an opportunity to learn and ask questions. And I certainly don't want her to be taught "abstinence only" sex ed.

My parents were so glad for sex education in schools and so was I. No awkward birds and bees talk.

I think it is absolutely crucial that kids get sex education and I believe condoms should be distributed. Kids are going to have sex no matter what. They should know how to do it safely and responsibly.

I think the value of sex education vs. abstinence only "education" is pretty clear and well documented in teen pregnancy, abortion and STD rates. Since I'm a fan of all those things (lower abortion/pregnancy/STD rates), I'm obv a fan.

My dad opted me out of sex education at school. I was the only one not allowed to participate and had to go to the library. I won't be doing the same with my kids.

I would prefer to talk to my kids about it first, but I'm all for them getting sex education in school. The best thing our teacher did was let us write down ANY question we had after her talk and she answered it (kept it anonymous). Took off a lot of pressure and let us ask the things we were dying to know but afraid to ask.

As early and as often as possible is my theory. I'll definitely be having age appropriate conversations often. I feel like sex Ed in school is good to have, but we didn't necessarily get accurate info, but I did go to catholic school. For instance, they really talked about nFP as a birth control method. But, I don't think that's a good approach. It's more of a way to get pregnant than to avoid getting pregnant. It just isn't a good or feasible method for teens.

I'm very, very pro comprehensive sex ed in schools. I would actually really like to teach it, but I'm elem certified and it's under HS health here. I have toyed with going back to school when DD is older for it though.

I don't really have an opinion on sex ed in schools as I was not raised in public school and at this point the plan isn't for our kids to attend one.

I am, however, very pro parents stepping up and delivering an honest comprehensive message about sex to their kids and doing it in an age appropriate manner over the years. I never had any sex ed from anyone over the years other than my mom and because it was handled naturally and developed as a conversation over the years it never was awkward or embarrassing. I hope to follow suit with my own kids.

I'm all for comprehensive sex education in school. I plan to be very open about it at home as well.

I think it's important to be taught in schools and to try to have the talk with your kids. Somethings were left out in the school one. It would have been super awkward to have the talk with my parents because they never talked about this kind of stuff. I'm hoping to have a better relationship with my kids.

I'm all for it. I believe they should communicate with parents and give them an opportunity to continue the conversation at home. A lot won't - or they suck at it - which is why I think it is even more important.

I went to middle & high school in the "good" county in my area, and had abstinence only education. I believe it is the same now. I also had a high school science teacher skip the evolution chapters in our biology book.

As with anything, I would like the chance to review the materials and methodology. I realize I won't be able to control everything that my child is exposed to, but I would at least like the chance to make sure that there's no fear mongering involved.

The thing about sex is that a lot of it is emotional and not all kids have the same level of emotional maturity.
