Do you shake? I've always been told to never shake breastmilk. I just found out daycare has always shaken if it's separated. (So...going on 8 months now...)

I read that you are supposed to swirl and not shake so that is what I have done.

Yeah, I did when the fat was stuck on the sides. I heard "swirling" is better but I figured my LOs were still getting milk from nursing so I didn't care.

I used to shake but after hearing that you aren't supposed to shake I stopped.

I didn't. And I obsessed about whether I was swirling too hard. Then I read this http://biomarkersandmilk.blogspot.com/2014/08/swirled-or-shaken-does-shaking-actually.html?m=1 and stopped worrying.

i'm not a scientist but i would venture to guess that you really have to shake the sh*t out of a bottle in order to exact damage. if your LO is healthy (well, as healthy as one can be going to daycare) and growing, i wouldn't worry about it too much. however, that being said, if i did find out my daycare was shaking the bottles, i would probably ask them to swirl instead, just for my neurotic peace of mind.

There always seems to be contradicting advice when it comes to baby stuff, and it drives me crazy!

I always swirled because I heard not to shake, but I know that daycare has shaken it sometimes.

I have worked in NICU for 8 years and I have never seen any reputable source telling you not to shake breastmilk. I think it is one of those online myths! I asked 3 LCs about it and they all said there is no reason NOT to shake! We actually shake additives in in NICU - you would never get them to mix in properly otherwise ...

@MsMini: good to know, I shook for months and then read online and was like OOPS.

I read that you shouldn't, but we definitely did if there was stubborn fat hanging out on the side of the bottle.

We always shook b/c we were never told otherwise. So I'm happy to see that there's some research out there that it doesn't matter.
