I have been renting a hopital grade pump for the past six months and so far, it has been very cheap (like a few dollars a month). Unfortunately, the cost has changed and now I will have to pay much more, to the point where it wont make any sense to continue renting. Lo is six months and is mostly breastfed with about one solid "meal" per day. Do you think it is worth it to buy a breast pump now? I am just wondering if I would need a pump...right now I am working so I need to pump during the day but starting next week, I will be staying home so I could just nurse whenever Lo wants...

Under the new Obamacare you should be able to get a breast pump with your insurance.

You probably don't need a powerhouse pump (pis, etc). But a cheaper pump can always be useful. I have a nice $40 one side electric pump that I really like. My sister just bought it for herself when she needed to be away from her baby for just a day.

@MungBean: Each plan is different, but I would call and check, mind is 100% covered after meeting my deductible. Some policies of friends they have to be working in order to get it, so I would just make a call!

It went into effect August 1st. You might want to call your insurance company to make sure they are up to date, but if they try and tell you they aren't covering it - they are wrong.

Hmmm...maybe you can get a hand pump because you probably don't need the double electric pump if you can nurse all the time?

@MungBean: I would definitely check your individual insurance plan. Mine only reimburses up to $50.

If you're going to be at home, I wouldn't go with a double pump unless you can get it covered. I'm a SAHM and have the Medela Swing. It's more than enough for what I need. (Full disclosure, I would definitely take a double pump if someone else were paying for it, but it's not necessary at all in my situation.)

i'd definitely get a pump - probably not the pump i got (pump in style) before the kids were born. but something smaller and cheaper.

Everyone, thank you very much for your suggestions! I called my insurance company today and after being bounced around from person to person, they finally figured out the rental fee will be covered in full. So yay, problem solved!!
