The multiplication tables thread had me reminiscing...
Did anyone else have to do math timed tests in school? Like, you got a sheet with 100 math problems and had 5 minutes to try to get them all right?
I loved doing these in 2nd grade! We had them for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Once you got a perfect score in 5 minutes, you moved on to a harder test. Eventually, the tests even mixed the different operation types together!
Anyone else remember these?

Yes! I think we did 80 multiplication questions and we got 10 minutes in grade 6.

Ugh. I was good at math but I hated these. I felt like they were so unnecessarily stressful! And I'm not even a anxious person.

When I was student teaching, my mentor teacher would do this and then have the kids calculate their percentage (out of 50 problems) then graph their correct score so they could see the change. It was very motivating!

I remember them but that's mostly because my mom still uses them in her fourth grade classes!

We did not do these in school. We didn't really learn arithmetic because a lot of kids were in Kumon so they gave the rest of us calculators.
I tutored for a tutoring company in high school and we had to start every session with a timed math test. I had to learn my times tables so I could correct the tests quickly.

We did them. I hated it. I do much better working out the math than memorizing tables. I dunno. I don't see how emphasizing speed is a helpful learning strategy.

Ugh this just stressed me out. I hated (still hate math) my brain just isn't great with it so it was a constant struggle. I had a math tutor for years.... Still not good at it.
