So LO has been cleared to start on food. For cereal we will be starting with oatmeal, and then I want to move to veggies. Honestly, I have no idea where to start. What did you give baby first? Any advice?

We alternated between fruits and veggies and we dont do cereal. Never saw the point. We started with apples, I added a little cinnamon to them the 2nd day and she loved them.

Cereal does have benefits, such as iron. And grains are on the food pyramid too! We often do mostly fruit with cereal mixed in for breakfast, and veggies for dinner. We started with bananas, apples, pears for fruit and sweet potatoes and squash for veggies!

We started with yams for veggies and she loved them. We then did peas, zucchini, green beans, carrots (FYI, constipating), beets, acorn squash.
I found that when i gave her bananas and apples she got really constipated so i make sure to mix it with pears or peaches (any of the "P"s) when i give it to her.

We did an avocado/breast milk purée. She didn't love it. I think we'll try squash next then bananas!

We skipped cereal and went straight to pears for his first food. He's also had unsweetened applesauce, carrots, and bananas. Most important things his doctor told us to be aware of are constipating foods so alternate those in and also to not start a new food for 3-4 days so you can check for allergies. We're probably going to start sweet potatoes this week since I bought a lot for Thanksgiving!

@chrispygal: Oh my gosh! I can't believe she is old enough to start eating solid foods!

We didn't do cereal either. We started with sweet potatoes and bananas. She didnt love it at first but I think it just took some getting used to. The first few times you feed solids your LO will just have a few bites and then at each feeding they just naturally start to eat more and more!

We skipped cereal. We started with sweet potatoes, then carrots, and then pears. Now we do whatever. We only use cereal in the mornings. I put a little in her fruit to thicken it.

You don't have to do cereal at all. The food pyramid does not apply to babies - they are still getting the majority of their nutrition through breastmilk/formula.
And in regards to the iron - there are plenty of foods with naturally occurring iron that are better for you than fortified cereals. Greens (spinach, collards, etc), sweet potatoes, parsley, tomatoes, apricots, olives, lentils, etc. All high in iron, naturally.

@Jennimac: I know!
Thanks for all the advice! We did some oatmeal mixed with formula today and she did ok. Gagged a couple of times, wanted a few bites, and then got pretty indifferent about it. haha. I'll probably try some squash later this week and go from there. I have the beaba babycook machine. Can't wait to try it out!
@caffeinated: Great advice on alternating the "p's" in with foods that make her constipated!

Our pediatrician recommended the following progression as a guideline:
1 - cereal in the morning (am) and afternoon (pm)
2 - cereal (am) / veg (lunch) / cereal (pm)
3 - cereal (am) / veg & fruit (lunch) / cereal (pm)
4 - cereal & fruit (am) / veg & fruit (lunch) / cereal & veg (pm)
5- cereal & fruit (am / veg & fruit (lunch) / cereal & meat & veg (pm)
I started at 5 months went to the next level when it seemed LO could eat more. LO is 7 months now and is at the last level.

I started with organic brown rice cereal (Happy Bellies brand b/c it has probiotics) and then banana, then sweet potato, then pear, avocado, etc. I basically alternated between fruit and veggie and I always add a dash of his organic brown rice cereal in it, especially when it's a bit runny. I haven't been as good making the veggies myself but I'm trying! It's hard with two so I bought a ton of organic Gerber and organic Plum pouches as well. They come in handy when we go out to eat. I started with one meal a day for the first month, then two meals a day for another month, and we're getting close to eating 3x a day now that he's entering his 3rd month of solids. I have no reasoning to why I'm doing it one month at a time. Just thought that it worked. Haha!

Nervewracking, isn't it? How old is your lo? Our daughter is 5 months, 1 week and we started solids...today! I gave her some banana and she seemed okay with it. She wanted to be in control of the spoon, though.

We did veggies first so green beans, carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, cauliflower...

We're not starting yet, but are planning on starting him with a soft-boiled egg yolk, then probably avocado. Even though I can't stand it, lol.
coconut / 8234 posts
We started with avocado, then sweet potato, banana, oatmeal, peas, pears, and butternut squash. LO will try kale or spinach this week. At 7 months LO eats 2 "meals" a day--breakfast and dinner. Breakfast is usually oatmeal mixed with pear/apple/sweet potato. Dinner last week was a butternut squash, pear, and cinnamon puree.

The food pyramid obviously does not apply to babies, but they will be eating grains soon enough as they get older. The iron in the cereal is good when they are so young and can't/don't eat food like tomatoes and olives and lentils, before they start eating more adventurous. Lots of different pediatricians, lots of different perspectives! Certainly isn't going to be bad for them until they can eat a wider variety of more nutrient dense food.

We haven't started yet, we are waiting till 6 months. But we are starting with sweet potatoes.

@mediagirl: Yes! It is very nerve wracking! LO is 4 1/2 mo. She was barely aware of the spoon. haha. Cute your LO wanted to be in control already.
@FutureMrsMcK: Oooh, I love avocado! The soft boiled egg yolk sounds great too.
persimmon / 1205 posts
@mrsjazz: How are you going to prep the kale/spinach? Great nutrient filled greens!
coconut / 8234 posts
@chrispygal: I'm not too sure yet, either steam it or sautee it in a little bit of olive oil and then puree and mix it with something else. I will probably mix it with something she's already eating like sweet potato or squash.

We totally skipped baby cereals since we're doing blw & all the ones carried at my local stores have soy in them (DD is mspi).
I figured sweet potatoes would be a good first but she didn't like them & really didn't even eat any of them (just barely tasted) so I don't really count them. Next was a piece of unseasoned steak that she sucked & gnawed on & LOVED! Then some organic grass fed ground beef, bananas, preloaded spoon of coconut milk yogurt, & blueberries.
Right now since I really want to make sure she's nursing enough & gets most of her calories from that I just give her whatever we have fruit/veggie wise & don't stress too much.
I plan on making some sweet potato fries again tonight & see if she'll go for them this time.

We skipped rice cereal and went straight for veggies. I started with butternut squash because giving local & in season is important to me. We've been at it almost a month and she's had roasted butternut & acorn squash, carrots, bananas, peas & peaches. I'm taking it nice & slow due to severe allergies from both sides and I'm nursing so no rush.
@runsyellowlites: where did you find coconut milk yogurt? I'm planning to go to 2 solids a day soon and would like to give something lighter more breakfasty in the AM. I should check our local whole food esque supermarket!

@regberadaisy: It's the SO Delicious brand! My local grocer HEB started carrying it!
GOLD / papaya / 10206 posts
We did BLW too and her first foods were avocado, banana and peache slices. Avocado was the clear winner. Now at 8 months, her favorite food is meat, beef especially. She basically eats whatever we eat for dinner (soup, steak, tenderloin, potatoes, veggies). We try not to stress about how much she eats, we just let her enjoy it.
@runsyellowlites: I was looking for your yogurt today at my grocery store and I found some We're going to try it tomorrow with her breakfast
How do you give it to P? Do you spoon feed her, or let her go for it?
coconut / 8305 posts
@prettylizy: A little of both. I really got it because of the probiotic factor & I haven't been able to find a mspi probiotic I didn't have to order SO I'll spoon feed a couple bites (to make sure she gets some) & then just give her the spoon. She REALLY likes slamming it down on her tray O_o.
Oh, I've also frozen some in ice cube trays so I can put them in her mesh feeder.... Less messy that way. Lol

@prettylizy: we are almost at 8 mos and want to start meats, too. How do you prepare it? Although we are not doing BLW.
GOLD / papaya / 10206 posts
@runsyellowlites: BLW sounded like such a good idea, except it's SOOOOO messy! lol!!!
GOLD / papaya / 10206 posts
@LouLouBelle: We just feed her whatever we're eating. For instance, I roasted some prime rib, and just cut a hunk off and give it to her to gnaw on. Same with chicken, pork and even meatballs. If I'm cooking something that I know she won't like, I really liked the website littlegrazers.com for recipes of things that I can batch cook for her and just have on hand in the freezer to fill the gaps.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@prettylizy: which recipes are your fave?
I was tempted to give her a hunk of steak to suck on buy my husband was fraidy cat!

We started with veggies first because once they get a taste of fruit, they usually prefer that over veggies! I think we started with sweet potatoes and then peas.
persimmon / 1205 posts
@banana: Yes! We are going to move on to veggies after the cereal before we give her any fruit.
coconut / 8299 posts
@chrispygal: Ok good! Cause once we started feeding him fruits, he wouldn't eat his veggies! So we ended up mixing veggies + fruits and then sloooowly removed the fruit a little at a time.
persimmon / 1205 posts
@banana: I love my veggies but c'mon, fruit definitely tastes better! Good strategy with mixing and slowly removing the fruit!
coconut / 8299 posts
@chrispygal: I know! Who wouldn't prefer fruits over veggies, especially babies? haha. My son still doesn't like veggies (he's 2.5). It's a daily battle getting him to eat 2 peas.
GOLD / papaya / 10206 posts
@regberadaisy: I like the beef apple quinoa balls. I make them in huge batches and keep them in the freezer for when I need something for her for dinner on the quick.
I also like their frittata recipe. I cook it with no cheese in a casserole dish and just cut it into fingers (again, freeze extra) and pull them out for breakfast
