DD is 2 and I still have not given her peanuts!! Tomorrow is her 2 year check up and I was thinking of giving her some peanut butter in the waiting room so that we would already be at the doctor's office if she were to have a reaction. But I am still feeling nervous about this. I hope I am just being silly since we don't have peanut allergies in our family history. Were/Are you nervous to give your LO peanuts?

lol. Wagon Jr. is 2 years 5 months and I still haven't tried peanut butter. I'm just terrified! Even though at this point he's definitely had something with peanuts in it by now (and I for sure ate peanut butter while breastfeeding and never saw a reaction) I'm still so scared. Don't know why. Maybe we'll try it this weekend. Heh.

@Andrea: so many people have told me to just bring it to his next regular checkup and stick it into his mouth right before we go in. That way if he has a reaction they're right there to help him. I keep forgetting though!!!

I've been giving my Lo small amounts of peanut butter on english muffins. I eat peanut butter too and nurse her. So far so good

My LO has grabbed bits of peanut butter here and there because me and her daddy eat a lot of it.
I was watching a little girl and boy a bunch of years ago and for lunch they said to make the boy, who was 4, a pb&J sandwich. Well little girl, who was around 2, grabbed a few bites from him and I didn't think much of it. I told the mom when she got home about what they'd eaten and she told me her husband was mildly allergic to peanuts and they hadn't tried giving their little girl peanut butter but now she didn't have to worry about it. I felt so bad but had no idea and luckily nothing happened.
So I would try sooner than later since as she goes out into the world she's going to start having things that are either made in the presence of peanuts or given to her by unknowing people who assume you'd tell them if she had an allergy.

charlie accidentally had peanut butter in cookies, so i didn't think he was allergic. then a kid at daycare gave him peanuts. we didn't give charlie anything peanut related until he was after 2 too!
i would def do the peanut in the waiting room thing!

We had a friend give LO something with peanut oil in it (a slaw kind of dish) when he was like 9 months. Now LO snacks on peanuts

This past weekend, an old co-worker just posted on FB about having to take their child to the ER for a peanut allergy.
It was the first time they gave their kid straight peanut butter. They've given their son things with peanuts in it in the past but never just peanut butter. It really scares me how many kids have an allergy nowadays.I was reading the FB conversation and one parent suggested giving their kids peanut butter in the parking lot of a hospital.

I think the thing to keep in mind with all food allergies is that you can develop them at any age.
A couple of Christmases ago, my cousin's ex-husband was eating pistachio nuts in the other room when my grandfather came in and told us someone had better check on him. When he came into the room where we were all sitting his face had started to swell. My cousin took him to urgent care where they treated him for a severe allergic reaction. He had eaten pistachios all his life without any problems until that point (he was about 35).

We just gave our son peanut butter and he's 2. I just gave him a little tiny spread of it on a cracker and he gobbled it up. Then I waited a few days and then did it again and it was fine. Now he eats it all the time.
If you're concerned, your idea of feeding it to her right before her doc appointment is a good one.

You can safely test any item by applying some to the inner wrist then letting it dry overnight. If the area is red where you applied it, then she's allergic. If not, then she's not or is negligibly sensitive to that item. Hope this helps!

@Red: Can you do the test anywhere else on the skin? DD always gets eczema flare ups on her wrists so it might be hard to differentiate from a peanut allergy.

@purrpletulips: this has happened to me, one by one, with most fresh fruits and veggies!! My allergies are thankfully not as severe, so I've never had to go to the hospital, but the itching and swelling are pretty annoying. I once had a salad at CPK that I'd eaten many many times before, and while I was eating I was noticing itching in my mouth. Then the insides of my cheeks and my tongue all started swelling up and I couldn't talk!!! I could breathe just fine, so I insisted on not going to the hospital, and eventually the swelling went down. Turns out the chopped salad had jicama in it (basically a veggie like a raw potato) and since I didn't know what it was, I obviously didn't know I was allergic to it...!!
The same thing happened with my dad, and right around the same age-- early 20s into his 30s. We're both allergic to the same kinds of fruits and veggies.

My husband has an extremely severe allergy to peanuts but the really crazy part is that as a toddler he had peanut butter on several occasions before he started to have an anaphylactic reaction. If your family isn't prone to allergies it probably does not need to be a major concern but I wanted to point that out.

@Red: i'd be weary of putting the peanut butter on them & leaving it overnight just because if there was an adverse reaction you might not respond quickly enough as you & LO would both be sleeping. the peanuts don't need to be consumed to cause a reaction. i know quite a few people with peanut allergies & something as simple as a kiss on the cheek after someone had eaten a peanut butter cup a few hours earlier caused a reaction.
LO is also more likely to have the allergy if she has eczema, i've heard many Drs suggest holding off another year in kids who suffer from eczema or have family members with food allergies. you can have blood test done if you are really nervous about it or just do it before you go the the dr like you said. chances are she'll be fine=)

i've been eating peanut butter everyday now and I'm nursing. Was I supposed to avoid peanut butter while nursing?

@MrsBells: the nutritionist who presented at both my birth and breastfeeding class said that if there is a history of allergies to a particular food in the family then it is best to avoid that food while nursing; however I don't know that this is a hard and fast rule.

@mrs. bird: For 99% of items, the skin contact won't result in a significant reaction since it's not injested. It should be safe for kids that are older (2+) cause I'm sure you would have already seen a reaction from random peanut exposure (unless s/he's very sheltered) if s/he is extremely allergic to it. Although, you're right, to be safe, you can always request a blood test to be 100% safe. My LO is highly allergic to peanuts as well but luckily she's not affected by peanut dust.
I also agree re: eczema: From what I've read, eczema is a very mild reaction to something you're allergic to (the most common being wheat, soy, milk or certain chemical irritants).
ETA: Just a disclaimer that I'm not a medical doctor, just regurgitating what I've read.

Now that I know that LO has a milk allergy, I'm afraid to give her anything remotely known to be allergenic (is that the right word?)...Totally bring it to her appointment! And some Benadryl.

I think it's a good idea to try at the doctor's office. I'm not really worried about it, but I'll wait until she's 2 like the doctor suggests. I love peanut butter so I'm hoping LO will be able to enjoy it too.
