LO has been in daycare since 4 months and LOVES it. He has literally never cried once at drop-off - doesn't even look back at us. That is, until last week... Last Monday he suddenly freaked out on DH at drop-off and it went on all week. Then I took him in this morning and he was saying "No Mama" as soon as we turned onto the road daycare is on, and in full hysterics by the time we got to his classroom. The teacher had to pry him off my legs 
She told me that he gets over it within a few minutes and is totally fine the rest of the day - he doesn't want to leave when I pick him up at the end of the day. But I am having some serious guilt about how sad he is at drop-off all the sudden. Anyone else go through this? How long did it last?

I'm sorry you're going through this. It's absolutely terrible. We drop S off at school twice a week. For the first 5 months, he was terrible. Was in hysterics every time I left him (I always have drop off). Then I got him into a nice routine of eating his breakfast there...and he was good for 2 months. Then, all of a sudden, he was back to hysterics. He started getting his canines when it started, so I thought it was a clingy teething stage. It continued until he got his first 2 year molar. He's 22 months now and has good days and bad days.
Just keep the consistent routine as best you can. Talk fondly of the teachers when you're home. We find that it helps to let him know the night before that he's going to school the next day to see his teachers and his friends. Lots of luck and hope it gets better!!

Going through the exact same thing right now with my Sept '12 DD. She used to be so easy at drop off and has been crazy the past couple of weeks - clinging to my legs / yelling in the parking lot / running after to me. I hope this stage goes by quickly!
The teachers always say she calms down quick but I didn't really believe them, so one day I did stay in the building after I dropped her off, and she was totally fine after 5 minutes, so that at least made me feel better.

That's a good idea to wait 5 minutes and peek in on him. I've called a couple of times, but it would help me to see it firsthand. His teacher told me last week she thinks it was the first time she had ever seen him cry - and he's been in that room since March - so I KNOW he's happy there, but it's so hard to leave him so upset.

S also calms down the second I leave. I know b/c I lingered and it's literally a minute of crying and he's fine. I think it's just the initial shock of you leaving. I make sure not to sneak out on him though. I give him a kiss, tell him daddy will be picking him up later and that he'll see me after that. I say bye, hand him to the teacher and I'm out the door.

We don't do daycare but my son was also late to separation anxiety. In our case it seemed to coinside with weaning. He is improving a lot now at 23 months but from 17 on he was just terrible around strangers or family, even his dad. He just always wanted me and it was heartbreaking and really hard to ever get a break. I hope this passes soon for you!
