My LO is 3.5 weeks old and I'm still dealing with a low milk supply. I breastfeed but I know it is not enough right now. Do any of you supplement breastfeeding sessions with formula? Do you give a bottle before or after your LO is at your breast?

I am not a breastfeeding mom (yet), but I am an NICU nurse. When we have Moms supplement breastfeeding in the hospital, we suggest the baby nurses at least 10 minutes on each breast, then offer the supplement immediately after breastfeeding. If you supplement, make sure you pump as well to help build your supply!

I did for a while. I breastfed first, so she'd be hungry and it would help keep your supply up. Then my hubby would give her a bottle, breastflow, so it's just like breastfeeding and she won't get used to a faster bottle that's easier to use.

I had an unplanned c-section and an infection in my uterus so the baby and I were on IV meds and antibiotics for several days...I don't know if that was the cause, but my milk didn't come in for almost a week and my baby was losing too much weight so we had to supplement with formula (fortunately only for about 8 feeding sessions).
Our ped told me to breastfeed her from both sides for 10-15 minutes (we had to keep waking her while she was feeding) and when she was done, we would offer her as much formula as she would take. While my husband gave her the supplemental formula, I would pump for 15 minutes to try and build up my supply. After a few feeding sessions, we started giving her the pumped breastmilk - and we used a syringe because she started rejecting the boob.

The way it worked, I breastfed and then pumped to try to get any remaining breastmilk that LO was unable to remove. I would also continue to pump (even through the night when LO was sleeping) so that I would have some breastmilk in bottles for the next feed. Eventually, I was able to breastfeed and supplement with breastmilk (from one of my night pumping sessions) for all of LO's feedings, except one. My last feeding of the night was one bottle of formula. We did that until 9 months!
It was a lot of work but still doable.
