I just noticed a bottom tooth coming through on my 8.5 month old baby! That's exciting, but I'm worried about potential nursing challenges or, yikes, biting! Can you girls tell me what I can expect with her new teeth coming in?

Nursing and teething wasn't as horrible of a combination as I expected it to be. My kiddo got her first two teeth right at 6 months, and had 13 teeth by the time she fully weaned at 19 months.
Her latch was more firm (and later more toothy, if that makes sense) whenever she was teething. She did bite on occasion with teething, but I just firmly told her no and unlatched her whenever she did it. The biting was way worse as a toddler than as an infant. She also always nursed way more when teething.

I had a similar experience to @LindsayLou:
I was relieved to not have many instances of DD biting & we are still nursing some at nearly 2yo.

I still have a mark from when my LO got a bottom tooth! I found that he initially did bite me but the real problem was that his tooth would rub the spot for the following weeks while it was trying to heal, and so it would just keep bleeding and reopening. I found that what helped was a combination of lansinoh and nursing lying down to change the orientation of tooth to nipple.

My 6m old DS just popped the two bottom ones and it hasn't affected nursing. He is chewing on everything these days but thankfully not on me! I do remember with my DD that she bit me twice and both times I was so shocked that I screamed 'No!' She only did it the two times thankfully. Good luck!!

@agold: mine had her first tooth by four months I think and I always worried I would get bitten. She got her teeth fairly early and got lots. I never got bitten once and nursed until 13 months.

I find that I can always tell when a new tooth is coming because W's latch gets a little weird and uncomfortable - kind of temporarily bitey. Otherwise, biting is pretty infrequent - he really only does it when he's feeling naughty. He's 14 months and has 6 teeth.

The bottom teeth didn't bother me so much as long as she latched properly which meant her tongue was out and covered her bottom gums/teeth. It was more the top teeth that I could feel later on.

F has teeth coming in, too. None have popped out yet bet his pedi said yesterday she could see that six(!!!) are starting to get close. She said they may come in close together. I feel like his latch has changed lately, don't know if that's a thing. But I've been having some issues with soreness and cracks that I never had before

My LO only bit me a few times and it never did any damage thankfully.
As others have said I only really noticed anything different when she was actively teething. Sometimes that was really the only way I even noticed she had a tooth coming in!

Teeth are a non issue if LO is latched properly - as others have said, the tongue has to cover the lower teeth and even if LO has a mouthful, they can't latch on and nurse and bite at the same time.
I'm still nursing my 21 month old and he has 16 teeth, I think now? I would say maybe 6-8 months ago we had a little biting spell where over the course of a few weeks he bit me probably 4-5 times. I would just stop nursing him, say don't bite or whatever, and then watch him REALLY closely. They will unlatch prior to biting. If he did that, then I moved his head/mouth away from my boob so he couldn't bite.
Now that he's older, he will sometimes give me a smile and act like he might bite or put his teeth down but he thinks it's like a game. If he does that, nursing time is over. It's a non-issue now and hasn't impacted our nursing relationship at all, really.

With DD1 I think she bit me once or twice and was fine; but we only nursed until 9 months.

My LO got her bottom two teeth around 5 mos and now at 11 mos has 6 teeth. She nurses longer, especially at night, when teething, and when the new teeth come in, her latch changes somewhat - no biting, but just more friction, if that makes sense. Changing nursing positions helps alleviate any soreness from that. She has taken a little nip once or twice, but nothing severe - I don't think she even knew what she was doing. Overall, teeth haven't been such a big deal.

@LindsayLou: @GoGoSnoGirl: @kitty: @delight: @Mrs. Goose: @erinbaderin: @T.H.O.U.: @petitenoisette: @MrsADS: @snowjewelz: @sauerkraut: Thank you for letting me know that teething can pretty much be a non-issue in terms of nursing. Phew. I hope that's the case for me. And thanks for the tips!
@MrsSCB: Good luck with the incoming teeth! Wow! Six all at once! What an exciting time, really. I feel like getting a first tooth is such a big milestone!

My first got his first teeth late, and bit me a few times. I think part of it was he was less interested in nursing. It was not insurmountable. There were a few times I had to pump and give a bottle. My second got teeth earlier, and had no trouble nursing, but he had always been a good nurser. I had been very worried, because both my mom and MIL had significant biting issues.

We didn't have any nursing challenges with the exception of a little bit of biting. She seemed to do it when she was teething/upset. I never told her no or anything, just pulled her away for a few seconds when it happened.

@agold: yeah, I feel like I've been waiting forever! Though I'll probably miss the little gummy smiles, too
