Tell me about transitioning your little one to an open cup. Did anyone transition from bottle to open cup and skip straw/sippy cups altogether?
The Oxo Tot Training Cup looks like it would be good. And it looks like they also sell a sippy cup set that includes handles and the same training cup lid. Anyone have experience with this cup?

I didn't really but I let B have sips from my cup and he keeps getting better at it. But I have a friend who did what you mention and her daughter would drink perfectly from any open cup at 11 months. Mom would hold the cup. I never thought to ask if she used any teaching cups though.

We started practicing right around 12 months with a small plastic shot glass. LO did pretty well with it, but we could only give him a tiny bit at a time. Then he mastered the straw cup and we got busy (and lazy). Now at almost 2 he is pretty good at it, but still only with a small amount. I'm not brave enough to give him a full glass yet. You can practice in the bath tub

We transitioned straight to an open cup - we just used a cup. We now use a mix of both open cups and straw cups, because with an open cup you have to be watching all the time so they don't dump then out. So in the car or whatever she just uses the straw. She wanted to drink out of a cup, so that's why we did it.

@Mrs. Lion: I think I have a small plastic shot glass. I will find it. My thoughts on using a training cup of sorts is that maybe the top part would be softer against his gums/lips etc. and good idea to practice in the tub!

We're in the middle of introducing shot glasses. I got a set from Ikea and give just a little bit of water. He gets really excited when he sees it and grabs the cup and drinks a little and blows bubbles into the rest. Supposedly it's good for their speech/oral motor skills! I'm thinking of getting this cup with handles so that I don't always have to hold and supervise quite so closely:

Our OT recommended those little Nyquil or whatever dosage cups! Too small for him to hold but at least a manageable volume

I am the only whose kid throws their cup on the ground repeatedly? I couldn't even consider skipping a sippy :-/.

We started with a shot glass around 7-8 months. By 9 months she would pick it up herself (although spill a lot when she put it down!). We never did a sippy or straw at home, but sent a straw cup for daycare. She's super proficient now at 17 months and uses adult glasses with no issues.

ikea has really good glass little cups that do not break easily and you can get small red solo cups as well which are very light.

Sippy cups never took off in this house so my daughter has been drinking off an open rim on her own since 6mo(lifting the cup to her mouth). She still needs a little supervision at 1 not to dump it all on the floor once she's done but she does quite well.

We introduced a cup at 6 mo when we had meals, I would hold it for her and teach her to put 2 hands on. Eventually she could hold it herself. When she tried to tip it over or knock it off the table, we just took it back and helped her for a couple weeks before trying again. We used straw cups when she was mobile, but also I gave a rule that cups stay on the table, so we transitioned to a full open cup accessible to her at 18 mo. With a little supervision and modeling behavior, it can be done!

@Rockies11: ikea is my favorite. i will have to look for those next time i am there. our closest one is 3 hours away! 
but i will check out the small solo cups. i may even have some little dixie cups in our kitchen somewhere.

@Mrs. Tiger: we were using a medicine cup (2tbsp size) with the SLP and it definitely works. my mom wanted to find something softer so we tried a teeny tiny little silicone bowl (i think they are maybe from a cooking set where you could add pinches of spices etc.) it definitely has a learning curve because i just had to give T a bath and change my clothes because he wanted to be held while drinking.
@spaniellove: that cup is adorable! and how cute your little J blowing bubbles. the shot glass is definitely on our list of things to work with.

We introduced open cups with sippy cups. At meals LO gets an open cup of water and a sippy of milk. Sometimes I remember to give her a towel with the open cup so she can clean up her own messes. Away from the table water is served in sippys or straw cups.

@PurplePeony: that's a good idea to use the toy dishes. We are also just giving a tiny bit at a time and refilling frequently. At this point I'm still helping him hold the cup and we still get plenty messy!

I bought the Oxo tot training cup and the trainer part was pretty useless. I also did not like the handles, but the cup by itself is a nice size and seems easy to hold. We ended up just using it as a normal open cup without the other attachments. For both of my LOs, we did not use a sippy, but encouraged straw cups and open cups. A straw cup can give them more freedom to serve themselves and be mobile with the cup (and not worry about spills), while we use an open cup when sitting down together. I think the best advice is to start with something small and only fill it with a very small amount of liquid. Expect spills, but it's amazing how quickly they can figure it out and handle it. DD is 13 months and has been drinking out of an open cup (with help) since 6 months, and just recently has started practicing drinking by herself in the bathtub.

We started at 8 months with both kids, using the ikea play cups. Within a month or so they stopped spilling! Very convenient down the line!

@jhd: Yeah, I can see that. We do very little of it because he will snatch the cup from me. I have to say, before this thread I thought what my friend was doing was unusual or very different. I had no idea that early cup drinking was a thing at all haha. So now I've learned something new. Maybe we'll have to practice it more.

@gilmoregirl: Well I wouldn't try it so early except that T just had his palate repair and he is refusing the bottle. It probably hurts too much. So I'm wondering if he will go back to the bottle when he feels better or if he will just prefer a cup from here on out. He hasn't ever used a cup until this week so it's a huge mess!

@jhd: My oldest is clumsier so I stayed away from cups for a LONG time. Maybe until he was 3? He still accidentally spills his drinks from time-to-time b/c he likes to play with his hands (they fight each other) while he eats. My youngest, however, he showed interest in a cup much earlier and have been using them since he was 1. Probably shortly after he turned 1. He's very careful and drinks really slowly. We have the Oxo Tot cups and I like them. The liquid does come out a little slower but it'll still spill if tipped over. Avent and Munchkin both sell cups that won't spill. I think it has a bunch of little slits around the lid so your LO can still drink out of like a cup but it won't spill. @erwoo: I saw that Avent cup and it looks good too! We are just going to order a few and see what works best. Good to know there are no spill options that aren't traditional sippy cups

@jhd: That's what I did with sippies. I think I had 10 different brands before we ended up with the Playtex ones for a long time. They weren't great, but those were the ones my oldest drank the most milk out of. He's almost 6 and you know what? He still uses them but without the stopper. He drinks perfectly fine out of a regular cup but I don't trust him during meals. He knocks his cups over at least once a day. If it wasn't for the sippies there would be a lot more milk spilled each time. The Avent ones came out too late for us. Otherwise, they do look like great cups!
