I have a 3 week old and she can sleep in the rnp or on our bed (night only). But some days all she wants to do is sleep on us! I read that you can't spoil babies this early on so we have been letting her sleep on us so that we can all rest easy. But now I'm afraid she won't want to sleep anywhere else!

yes - this is not a long term problem. Our LO slept on us for a long time - 10 months maybe, and then she decided she was over it and took to sleeping in her own bed.

T would only sleep on one of us when he was a newborn, and grew out of it at around 8 weeks. Then around 3 months he would only nap on us. He grew out of it too! Don't worry! At 3 weeks just do what works!

If it doesn't bother you, then it isn't a problem this early, I wouldn't think. It stressed me out having the baby on me all the time bc I was dealing with ppd and felt "touched out," but it doesn't sound like that's the case for you.

I wouldn't worry - babies are 'programmed' to want to sleep on you when they're so small. Can you imagine how they must feel going from the cozy, warm, safe womb to a cold, flat crib or bassinet in a scary & unfamiliar world?
In my experience, it's untrue that babies will never learn to sleep anywhere else. They're transitioning from the womb to the outside world & rely on you to help them feel safe. For us it was only a short time before our little one was ready to sleep elsewhere. Savour the short time that your baby needs you so much...

Hmmm. I have an almost ten month old who takes 2 naps a day in my arms ..... soooo, I'm going to be the odd man out here and say that you should try to get your LO used yo sleeping in her crib or swing or rnp.

I would also recommend that you try to let your LO used to sleeping somewhere else other than on you. My LO would only sleep on me until he was about 11 weeks old. He would wake up from naps immediately if I tried putting him down. (Fortunately my LO has always been a good night sleeper). I used to think that you couldn't spoil a baby, but I soon found out that that was so untrue (at least this was the case for my LO). Things got so bad that I couldn't even set him down when he was awake. I basically wore my baby all of the time. Things got better once I nap trained my LO at 11wks.
But, I do agree with the other moms about doing whatever you can to survive the first few weeks. -
3 weeks is too teeny to spoil. That said, as someone who conditioned my child to only fall asleep after being bounced on an exercise ball and later had to break the horrible habit, I'd have an eye towards introducing new ways of sleeping around 4-5 weeks. At 3 weeks, it's just survival though.

@Leah: I guess for us, LO has to learn at some point since I gotta go back to work! And daycare/grandma care sure won't be holding her for naps!

@Ms. Lilbunny: @Little Misters Mom: I def agree it never hurts to try to sleep/nap train a bit just in case LO doesn't grow out of it!
Her night sleep is pretty bad too.. We rock/sing/swaddle for so long and she still doesn't go down!

When DS was first born he never ever wanted to sleep alone, which led to co-sleeping out of desperation. My method that got him to sleep on his own was to try to get him fully asleep and then I put him in the PnP next to me. If he immediately woke up I'd rock him and back to sleep and try again. After 2 or 3 tries if it didn't work I'd stop trying and co-sleep until he woke up a couple hours later to eat. Then I'd start all over again to get him in the PnP. Usually as the night went on it would get harder and I'd be more tired so I'd just fall asleep nursing.
I never tried to push it but I was always working towards the goal of getting him to sleep separately. Eventually he would spend the whole night in the crib and after sleep training he sleeps 12+ hours usually. Naps were a different story because I actually liked having him sleep on me. But now I can put him down and walk away and just get a couple squawks in protest before he falls asleep.

@snowjewelz: The early weeks are REALLY tough. Slowly work on getting your baby to sleep in his crib/bassinet/rnp when you can. For night sleep, it's never too early to create a bedtime routine. A bedtime routine and an early bedtime is what really helped my LO.
When I napped trained my LO he was 11 wks old and he was at a very healthy weight. I wouldn't recommend nap training a 3 wk old.
