We moved LO (2.5) to a toddler bed 2 weeks ago. She was excited about her big girl bed and was fine for a week. And then started getting out. For a few days she just played in her room, so I let her be and she eventually settled as usual, but the last two days she's opening the door, insisting to come to our bed (she's never slept with us). Both nights she didn't settle until 11, exhausted and cranky (as am I). I'm thinking about locking her in but husband is really against it. I don't want to create bad habits like rocking and etc but this can't continue either. Any tips?

We had the same thing (fine for awhile, then wanted to come out.) We ended up using the baby gate, which worked well for the most part.

This happened to us - easy transition until she realized she could climb out of her bed, snd even worse once she realized she could open her door. It was honestly hell for two weeks...finally we bought a door knob cover and it only took her one night to realize that she couldn't get out. I think it was developmentally too much freedom for her to handle. The door knob cover did the trick and now bedtime is seamleas. We were able to take the door knob cover off after a month or so, and she doesn't even try to get out of her bed.

This happened when we tried switching right when she turned two- she just wasn't ready. We put her back in the crib!
We just switched again at 2.5 and it's been pretty easy. We got an OK to Wake clock and I think that's the game changer. She knows to stay in until it lights up, and actually does! Even if she doesn't nap and bounces around her bed for an hour and a half, she waits for t to light up. Could you try that?

@Foodnerd81: we have it but it's not clicking with her yet. And naps aren't an issue at all, it's just bedtime.

@Charm54: I'm trying to wear husband down on locking her in. I'm not thrilled about it either but I'm just not sure anything else will work.

We had the best luck once we locked E in. She tried to climb into her newborn brothers crib a few times, so safety concerns sealed the deal for us! It completely stopped the escape game for us

The monkey lock allows the door to be open like 3 inches so they can stick their hands out and holler at you and you can tell them to go back to sleep - if that will help. It also allows to to hear and peek in if need be. We have them all over the house to keep DS out of certain rooms and closets and he doesn't mess with those doors anymore.

@blackbird: I am very nervous about climbing INTO the crib- the bed is next to the crib and she can climb into it from the bed and from the crib into bed. There is no other way to set up the room and they will share the room if we don't move before that. I can just see her climbing in with the baby and bringing her stuffed animals or something...

@Foodnerd81: it is so scary! E also likes to "share" her toys and dump them in there-and many are not soft! She doesn't do it anymore, but it was an issue in the beginning! Gentle is really not in a toddlers vocabulary lol

+1 to the baby gate and putting it back as needed after they graduate off of it.

My DD finally stopped doing it after 2 or 3 weeks. I started losing my mind a bit but now she sleeps great in her bed.

@gingerbebe: yep. Door monkey was a life changer for us. I dreaded bedtime and nap time and it was pretty awful. Once we did the door monkey, she figured it out and doesn't even get up anymore.

Same thing happened here (at same age) and we put bars back on the crib and waited two months, then tried again with a gate. Second time around I think he got it that to keep the bed he had to stay in and he was never even mad about the gate (maybe got up to look for me like three times?) he likes to close the baby gates himself so he was sort of proud to have it on his door "oh look. My gate!" which made us laugh. It worked great because then we could be super low key about the few times he did get up. "Oh, goodnight ds". Instead of the first time around where we would drag him back to his room fifty times and he would mimic us "stay in bed ds! Hahahaha!"
Good luck! So exhausting when they are getting out. We were going crazy for a few nights there!
