LO will be 9 months old on Thursday so we've tried to slowly start the transition to table foods from purees. We've been working on it here and there for a few weeks. Twice this weekend, though, when we tried, it ended with her throwing up all over the place.
We tried with bread and sweet potatoes (two separate times). I know both were soft enough for her to eat and in small enough pieces. Both times, she did okay for a bit and then all of a sudden started gagging. We knew that was somewhat normal so we let her work it out. Then a few minutes later, after getting another bite, she would start choking. She was gasping for air and last night she actually started to rapidly turn red (which I can only assume was going to turn to blue eventually). We got the piece out of her throat and then she threw up everywhere. This happened the first time too, only she was able to cough the piece out herself before throwing up everywhere.
DH said maybe it was because she wasn't drinking fluids with her meal. But she won't drink with her meal, I've tried. And she's just fine with puffs and yogurt melts. She can eat those without even gagging. Even chunky purees make her start gagging though.
She has her 9 month appointment Friday so I plan to ask about it then too but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to why this is happening? Is there anything we can do? Maybe she's just not ready?
Edit: She does pick up puffs and yogurt melts by herself really well but with other foods, she seems to prefer one of us feeding her (although we're working on her feeding herself). Also, she acts like she's chewing but with some of the pieces, she's obviously not, as they come up whole. So she's going through the motion of chewing but maybe holding it in the middle of her mouth so it doesn't get mashed up.
