How did the timing of your milk coming in compare between your first and subsequent births? With my first it took until day 5. I'm having a c-section again but hoping my milk will come sooner because my body knows what to do.

I had 2 C-sections.
With my first, my milk didn't come in for a solid week and I don't even think I made colostrum. I was nursing and pumping on a hospital grade pump around the clock and nothing. It was awful.
With my second, I definitely had colostrum and my milk was in by day 4.

It was definitely Day 6 (if Day of birth is Day 1) with #1. I think it was Day 4 with #2.

@kitty: c-section both times with my first it took about 4 days. with my 2nd the lactation consultant convinced me to start pumping right away and so my milk came in earlier on day 2. I would say definiltely pump as soon after birth as you can and also try to nurse the baby on each side even if you feel like theres nothing coming out

@Mrsbells: I nursed so much even though it was just a little colostrum but he really took a while to get the hang of it. So I'm definitely considering pumping this time. Did you use a hospital grade pump?

@kitty: yes the hospital provided a medela hospital pump which has great suction. I was very reluctant at first because I felt so crappy after the c-section. But it was all super easy and i was surprised how much milk i got the frst and then second time. I also got to keep the pump parts when I left. Although I cant use them since my pump isnt the same brand.

Both of mine were c-sections and I think my milk came in on day 3 each time.

Both vaginal for me, both born on Tuesday. First one milk wasn't fully in until Saturday. Second one it was in by Wednesday I think! Both born at term and spontaneous labor so it did strike me my body was just better at it!

First was around 3 days. Around 36 hours for my 2nd.

With my first my milk came in on day 5. This time was definitely by day 3. Both spontaneous unmedicated vaginal births, both about a week early.

I think it was day 4 with baby #1 and day 3 with #2. C sections both times.

Wow these are interesting! I only have one but mine came in 36 hours after DD was born (vaginal birth). Didn't realize that was not the norm.

Ds was vaginal birth (traumatic!) onsubday night. Milk in by Wednesday.
Dd was c section on Friday morning and milk was in by Sunday for sure. She left the hospital back at birth weight.

@Pumpkin Pie: a couple weeks! I felt like mine took too long. I just realised it was 6 days though not 5 that mine took.
Thanks for the responses so far! I'm going to express and hope for a quicker time.

Two vagina births- I believe it came in slightly sooner for number two, but the big difference is it came in like crazy. I had a pretty significant oversupply for a couple of weeks which I never had with my first.

@Foodnerd81: I was kind of wondering about that, and I had seen some stories that milk supply was better after the first time. I know my breast tissue grew a lot more quickly and suddenly in this pregnancy.

Two vaginal births-
DD1: Late in the day on day 4
DD2: by 48 hours PP, with a vengeance

After my first it came in on day 5 (vaginal birth with epidural). After my second, it was in by the end of day 2 (vaginal birth, no meds not even IV)

Both vaginal but inductions w/ pitocin. First birth, five days. Second birth, not even two.

@kitty: have you thought getting in touch with an IBCLC before your baby is due? My milk took 5-6 days to come in with my first (very long medicated vaginal labour and birth) so my midwife organised for me to see a lactation consultant at 34 weeks with my second baby. It was really great and a huge confidence boost to troubleshoot my previous experience and to make a plan for my new baby. By the time I went into labour I had 25mL of colostrum frozen into small syringes but didn't need them because my milk was in by day three.

@kitty: weirdly, I did NOT notice as many breast changes with m my second pregnancy! But that could be because I stopped nursing the first at the exact time I got pregnant. Still it's weird how bodies do things differently.

@Kemma: that's a good idea! I actually plan to go see the hospital lactation consultant before the birth. When I was in last time, she didn't make time to see me and I felt really let down by the breastfeeding management. The nurses and midwives simply asked me if my milk had come in and I had no idea (but had a slight thinning of colostrum) so I just said "I think so" and they didn't even delve into any further.
@Foodnerd81: haha I think I only noticed because I stopped breastfeeding a couple months before getting pregnant and my poor old boobs got so saggy in that time!

Same; both vaginal births; milk came in on the 3rd day, the day after I came home. And with my 2nd I didn't even nurse her since she was in NICU.

Vaginal - 5 with my first and I want to say 3 for my second.
cantaloupe / 6751 posts
Forever day 5 with first, day 7 with second (although I made milk, it didn't actually "come in" until a full week after birth).
Vaginal birth, induced w pitocin both times. Pumping 24/7, fenugreek, blessed thistile, and more milk plus were key in making milk come in

Three days sooner the second time!! I was over the moon happy and relieved to hear gulps. It was a terribly anxious time waiting for my milk with the first baby.

I would say it came in 24-36 hours slower the second time around...which surprised me! Vaginal delivery both times...
