We're moving in a few weeks and we decided to change T's preschool to a school that is 5 mins from the new house (rather than 20-25 mins each way). They break for the winter recess (2 weeks) so he'll end his current school 12/18 and start new school 1/4. This week, he'll do a 45 minute visit at the new school and I'll talk to him about the change. Next week, his last week, his current school will do a little party for him. Any other suggestions? We move 12/27 so it's going to be a big ball of emotions and transitions for him, I'm guessing.

No real tips but our gal Janet Lansbury did a podcast about kids starting school. it might apply to your situation since it's a new school. I'd just prepared for tears and clinginess and plan to spend lots of time together after school...if they happen, you're ready. But kids are resilient and he may just make the transition smoothly.

How old is he? He might be confused and wanting his old school at first but kids are resilient and tough and will adjust in no time. We moved too and switched schools right before she turned 3. I'm the beginning, she kept asking for her old teachers and old school but I explained to her now that we moved into a new house and she's bigger, she needs to go to a bigger preschool (the new one is bigger) and so that helped a little. The key is to be consistent and do what you always did at the other school, whether it be carpool, not lingering, etc.

Not sure how old he is, but my son switched schools at close to 3.5. It was in the summer, so there was no real break, we just started the new school after a weekend. We talked a lot about it the week before the change and he did get to visit. I stayed with him for maybe 30 min the first day and 10 minutes on the second. We had practically no problems.

There are a lot of good picture books about new schools. Maybe hit your local library and ask the librarian for help?

@misolee: @lamariniere: He's 3.5. We visit the new school tomorrow, then next week is his last week at the current school. Then a two week holiday recess and start at new school. And move in between. I'm sure it will be mostly fine, just curious how others have handled!

We switched my daughter schools at age 3 and she did great.
