My LO is 20 months and for the last few weeks it's been difficult to get her to sit at the high chair or booster chair to eat. Up until now she's been pretty good and has wanted to sit. Or if she didn't, I could usually entice her by giving her a few bites while out of the chair and then she wants to sit. But lately it's been a huge battle. I don't want to give her toys or let her watch TV or anything. Any other tricks?

I don't have personal experience yet but I have a friend with a toddler that hated to sit down and eat. They ended up getting her something that she could stand on and reach the table. They didn't care if she was sitting, as long as she ate.

Yea I have seen something similar with a toddler that hated his high chair so they would just let him stand while he ate.

@Mrsbells: @artbee: oh wow, you both have the same tip! i will give that a shot but i think my LO will just run around the house and food will end up everywhere - not sure how much she will end up eating.

Have you tried fun placemats? That worked for while but usually letting my lo bring a Dollie to sit at the table worked.

@Andrea: thats why they had the thing she stands in. It's wood and they put it next to the table. They lift her up to put her in it so she's stuck there at the table, but gets to stand and move around a little.

Sometimes I let my son sit at the table and eat with me. He thinks it's a game, and I typically am able to get him to eat more than he would if he was in his highchair. Honestly, it's easier for both of us!

@Katm558: do you mean next to you or in your lap? Lately, my daughter has to sit on my lap a lot to eat.

@Andrea, both. Typically he likes to sit in his own seat, but sometimes I let him sit with me. He plays this little game where he tries to feed me, and I ask him about what we are eating. I think that if you make it into this fun experience, your daughter may enjoy feeding time a bit more. Sometimes I set up a race track with food and let him drive a car thru his food. At each different type of food we make a pit stop, and eat what is there, and then move on to the next.

We let RJ play with toys, and more recently, his ipod touch. It's a horrible habit, I know, but he eats a ton and sits quietly for the entire meal.

DD was out of her highchair and booster seat pretty early. She ate more once we let her sit in a regular chair like us. I think she didn't like being confined by their safelty belts. she would sit on my lap alot too. It's tough, but to this day I still have to make mealtime interesting and fun to entice her to stay and eat... sometimes I'll read a book during dinner, or we'll color, play with stickers... We used the iPad/TV for a while, but are phasing that out or it will be a treat after dinner.

We have the same problem too. My son refused the high chair right before his second birthday. We got him a child's table and chair so half the time he eats there (we put the table tight next to our kitchen table) and other times, he sits in an adult chair at the table with us. It's really tough getting him to sit and eat these days and he's gotten a lot more finicky with food.

@NYCaliMama: @Katm558: you both make me feel better. i thought i was really babying my daughter by letting her sit on my lap to eat. but sometimes you just have to do what you have to do right? it seems like i will have to learn how to make meal times more interesting!

They have couple different styles and other color options as well. I was thinking about the ones from ikea as well, but never made it over there. Just love having everything shipped to us. One thing I don't like about it is that the wood is pretty light so there's no traction on our hardwood floors. It moves around when DS leans against it or if he just can't sit still in the seat. We don't have an activity table for him so this also serves that purpose as well. He'll color, draw or finger paint on it.
