My husband, my mom and I dropped off our son in daycare this morning and we were all in tears. He's 2 and he's never been away from either one of us for more than an hour. He was hysterical and screaming and crying like he was being tortured! It was the saddest thing ever. Sigh. I know it's gonna get better but I hate the thought that he thinks we abandoned him.
How long did it take your LO's to stop crying and actually enjoy daycare?

i understand your pain. charlie started daycare at 21 months, but really it is usually harder on the parents than the kids. they usually stop crying soon after you leave. charlie would cry 10 minutes max i think the first week. the second week he wasn't crying at all, but would sit in his stroller and watch the other kids play for a while. by the third week, he was loving daycare.
now he's been in daycare for 10 months, and we think it was the best decision we ever made. he is thriving and he absolutely loves it.
i know these first weeks will be hard, but it will get better -- i promise! and you will be amazed how much your lo learns. he will really crack you up!

@mrs.bee: Thanks for your encouragement! I know it's what's best for him because he will eventually like it and learn a lot. If my son is anywhere as funny as Charlie, I will be cracking up all day long! I'm glad you think it's the best decision you ever made. Makes me feel better about the whole situation. I'm also so glad that I chose to send him to the small home-based daycare. I think he needs that kind of environment.

@banana: maybe limit the number of ppl who drop him off? Might make adjustment easier for him.

@mr.bee: Yeah, I think we went a little overboard with everyone wanting to see his first day of daycare. haha. Tomorrow we decided only one of us will send him off. What's sad is that he was SO excited when we were first got there. He was playing and laughing and giggling. My mom told me he's STILL crying and it's been an hour.

Like Mrs. Bee mentioned, I'm sure it's harder on the parents then the kids. This reminds me of the song from Darius Rucker - It won't be like this for long. *tear* *hugs*

@mrs.jyw @rubies @Alivoo01: Thanks for your support. I'm trying to keep my mind off of it because every time I think about it, it makes me tear up. I"m sure the pregnancy hormones have a lot to do with it because I don't normally cry this easily.

@banana: awwwww banana, I do feel your pain.. Wagon Sr.'s first day was actually fantastic and I was still a mess all. day. long. Honestly, at his age it's really the best thing for him and before you know it he will LOVE it!!! I've talked to all kinds of parents, and I've heard things like "my daughter cried at every single dropoff for 2 years... but she stopped as soon as I left, every single day." When interviewing the daycare I asked if any kids cried ALL day... and the director was like... "well... we hold them if they cry... ..." she couldn't even really understand my question because all kids eventually stop crying! It's their job... and they've dealt with the worst kids, so they know!!
So go ahead and cry... get it all out.. before you know it you will be saying, just like most of us, "best decision we ever made!"

@mrs.wagon: I hope he ends up loving it!!! He's kind of shy by nature which is why this makes it so much harder on us. I'm glad to hear that a lot of kids stop crying after the parents leave. I just checked in and my mom said he doesn't hear him crying anymore (she's checking up on him). He was crying for an hour though. I can't even imagine having to drop him like this for a week or more!

Awww big hugs!! DD was only 6 months old and cried for the first two days (only right after I left). It was mostly out of sight out of mind for her. He will learn to love it - don't worry!

Aww!!! I'm sure they'll let you know if there is an issue! Today was Lala's first day of preschool. She came chasing after me as I was leaving. It was super hard! But when her dad left, he said she barely noticed, so that made me feel better!

Awwwhhh, so sad! My LO started daycare at 3.5 months so she didn't really notice. She is now 5.5 months and cries when DH drops her off.

@mrs.jacks: Awww. Glad she's adjusting well in preschool!!! Wow, preschool already?? Time sure flies by doesn't it? I'm sure we'll be preparing my son for preschool in no time!!
