I'm actually thinking of jumping straight to a full. It'll be more useful for sleepovers, etc.

We jump straight to a full size as well (our cribs convert to a full) I love that I can lay with my DS in his bed while we read and have plenty of room! Plus if we have guests we can have DS sleep with us and give our guests his bed (which can fit 2 people).

@locavore_mama: ummm... it just does! ha! I guess its a bigger crib? The back of the crib becomes the headboard and the front becomes the footboard. We got them from JCPenny's

DS went straight to a twin bed. It was an easy transition.

@locavore_mama: Nope just a regular mattress. Maybe when you convert to a twin you use the sides of the crib (which are much smaller)?

We switched to a twin. I would have been interested in a full, but since we have no idea where we will be in 3-5 years, and how big of an apartment we will have, the twin was a safe bet to make sure that it fits in any future bedroom. I don't know what a standard twin length is in the US, but here, it is 2 meters, which is 78 inches. My DH is over 6 feet and can easily lay down in DS's twin. We are hoping this twin will last until he moves out!

I've researched this a bunch, and the consensus is usually that families choose toddler beds if they are really, really tight on space in the child's room (or of course, if the crib just converts to one anyway). Most toddlers will outgrow a toddler bed before 4-5 years old, which is not that far off away in the grand scheme of things, so is the difference in length of the bed really worth it, if you'll have to replace it later? That said, we did do a toddler bed, because we were tight on space in our previous apt, but as soon as we moved, she was more than ready for a twin at 4 yo. Our 2nd DD went straight to a twin at about 18 months!

@luckypenny: I agree with pp's that 5/6 would be a stretch for the toddler bed. But I also agree with you that 20 months seems so small for a big twin or full! We got DS a toddler bed at 2.5 and he was in it until 4 which I don't regret because we have to use it soon for DD. The toddler bed was only $100 and bedding was $30 so it wasn't a huge expense.

Oh also, we just did a floor bed (aka, mattress on the floor) with pool noodles instead of bed rails and she's been fine. We made a padded headboard on the cheap and it looks pretty darn cute.
