Has anyone had their LO's tongue clipped due to a tongue tie? How long did it take to improve latch/sucking?

@MamaBehr: DD had this and it improved almost immediately. Has your LO's already been clipped?

I immediately noticed a difference but it took a solid two weeks before things were "normal" and I wasn't in pain at all. Our lactation consultant said she is happy with getting one good feed the first day where I wasn't in pain and then the next day 2, the next 3, and on and on. I know 2 weeks seems like an eternity but once you're through it, everything will be so much better!!

@Portboston: Did your doctor see the tongue tie and recommend it? Or were you having feeding problems and asked?
I'm trying to determine if that might be an issue for LO2.

@Autumnmama79: he was clipped earlier today. His biggest issue wasn't latching, it was the sucking and getting a full feed.
@Portboston: that's understandable. The ENT made it seem like they almost need to relearn how to use their tongue. I hope we see that kind of improvement!

Eh, she had a very minor one and it didn't really help after. Between just newborn lazy sucking and me having inverted/flat nipples we ended up having to use a nipple shield for a while.

@AggieDaze: we were having horrific problems. I was a ton of pain and he wasn't draining my breasts. The tie was missed by 2 pediatricians and 3 Lactation consultants. Finally his chiropractor caught it and referred us to an ENT. Google dr Ghaheri. His website has tons of info on how to look for one.
@MamaBehr: yes that's what they told us too. It also depends on the age. My LO had his clipped around 5 weeks. If they are older, supposedly it takes longer to see a difference.
Eta- there are some stretches and exercises you can do to help them work their tongue out. Our LC, Melissa Cole has a YouTube video were she demonstrates what she does. I think it helped M a lot with his tongue.

Our DS has a posterior tongue tie and lip tie that we had clipped when he was @3 weeks old. Unfortunately, nursing never improved (he had a small mouth too). We tried SNS systems, nipple shields, we regularly saw an osteopath, and ultimately stuck with pumping.
My great friend's second son had a tongue tie that was clipped and she had great success BF.
Good luck!

@AggieDaze: my pediatrician didn't even look, but my lactation consultant found it. We are having weight gain issues and I'm using a sheild because of a poor latch. @Portboston: my guy is 10 weeks old and not draining the breast, I have to pump after every feed and then give him that milk too!
@Alba4: I'm hoping this fixes it, but we will see! I think his issue is more complex than just a tongue tie. Why can't nursing be easy?!? (And this is my fourth kid, I know what I'm doing hahaha)

@MamaBehr: that's exactly how it was with us. The ENT said its like they're using your nipple as a straw and only latching onto the end of it. OUCH!!

We had T's done twice and the first time, it took about 5 days maybe before he would nurse again. We bottle fed and worked with him. The second time, he nursed in the office right after. I had a persistent bleb for about 5 weeks but then once that went away, everything went smoothly!

@MamaBehr: if your LO is already 10 weeks I would expect that it would take a bit longer to see improvement. Definitely do the stretching exercises so it doesn't re-attach. Did they clip a lip tie as well? was it a posterior tongue tie?

We had DDs clipped (and lip tie, too) at 1.5 weeks. Nursing was rough for the first few weeks, so I'm not sure when it got better, but she was less fussy within a week maybe? She had a high palette, too so we had to use a nipple shield until about 12 weeks which added another layer of complexity.

DS1 had his done at 5.5 months, and it took a good 3 weeks to see an improvement - but after that it was life changing. He was terribly upset at first every time I tried to feed him. DS2 is due to have his done today at 6 days old and I am hoping we will see a quicker improvement!
