Good luck! What helped me cope with the method we chose is that I focussed on the fact that when she got used to this, she would be getting sooo much more sleep, and better quality rest, and that was worth this temporary struggling. I hope you all have an easy night,

@lemondrop: thank you! First wake up. It's pretty rough. He has been up crying for 20 minutes. Have some mortrin for molars and a short feed as allowed the first three nights before putting him down awake to self sooth. He is very angry right now.

Wishing you the best. Hang in there. The first night is always the toughest.

@yin: thank you! Still going strong over here with the crying. We've had some mini lulls but for the most part he is still hanging on. I hope he will sleep soon.

He went to sleep at around 12:45 but just woke and he is crying again.

You can do it! Almost morning! You guys will all sleep better when it's over. He will be 100% fine not nursing at night, think of ttc if you need an encouragement push!

Okay we survived the first night and we even got some sleep. Tor had a huge nursing session before bed then went to sleep. He woke up at 11:13 and cried until 12:45. He got up and left the room a couple times too but I got up and put him right back. When he finally went to sleep he crawled over to me with an angry face then slumped down in my arms. It was really cute and it felt so good to sleep. His second crying jay started at 3:45 and only lasted about 30 mins then he was back asleep. He woke again at 5:30. The cut off is 6am but I held fast as didnt give in. This time he only cried for about 10 mins them went back to sleep. He woke again at 6:30 and I told him it was morning, opened the curtains nursed him till he fell sleep and slept some more myself. We did really well. I'm still dreading the next few nights but I must say it was totally worth it to get some better sleep. I hope he gets to hang of it and doesn't cry for as long tonight.

Good luck! Hope you continue to see progress! We were going to do Dr. Jay Gordon's method, but I decided to just do it all in one night. He woke up twice on the first night, and I remember holding him as he cried and cried for over an hour. I explained to him there wouldn't be anymore milk and offered water instead. Naturally, he was devastated. I had given him warnings earlier in the day, but seriously, I don't think a 17 month old would really get it. Second night, woke up just once and cried in my arms for 20 minutes, third night, 2 minutes, and then he got it. I was happy with how this went and wish I had done it sooner, but I don't know if I would have been the one that was ready yet. Being able to sleep through the night (for everyone) has been so wonderful! I shouldn't take it for granted!

@cranberryapple: oh man how wonderful that it worked so quickly for you. My son is very willful and day weaning was a month and a half long process so I am steeling myself for some regressions but I hope I am proven wrong.
I must say there is something very magical about watching them fall asleep all on their own. It felt like quite an accomplishment for both of us.

Thanks all! I will let you guys know how round two goes tonight. I am hoping better but bracing myself for his rebellion as well.

Thanks all. We had a lot of mini wake ups after the first two last night so I am very tired but all of them I was able to get him back down within minutes so we have made some real progress here. Hoping we can get less fragmented sleep tonight.

Night three was very minimal on the tears but still a lot of wake ups. He cried a few mins but I was always able up get him back down. Hoping for fewer stirrings as time goes on but I'll take it!

@MrsMccarthy: sounds like it's going pretty well!! I hope it continues to get better for you with the wake ups. Good for you for sticking with it!!

@MrsMccarthy: Not sure you came across this *fun* stat in your sleep training research, but night 3 is often the hardest... it seems our little people really "get it" by night 3 and know they're being trained. All three times we STed DD, she was STTN by night 4/5, but night 3 was rough. Hang in there and let us know how tonight goes!!!

Hey everyone! I am cross posting a bit but we managed to stick to our night weaning agenda pretty well despite both of us being sick.
Here is what I did and it worked well. I didn't deviate from the regular 11-6 weaning block but I added an extra feed before his bath ( I actually took a bath with him and fed him in there that way it felt like a special thing so he won't be confused by it but still gets the extra feed) and I fed him from bedtime until 11 as much as he wanted or needed. Then at 6:30 when he woke I fed him as long as he wanted and needed. Which luckily wasn't super long.
He did really well during the wake ups. He fussed and even got out of bed and tried to leave the room a couple of times but he didn't cry more than 5-10 minutes at a time.

@MrsMccarthy: So awesome!! That was smart thinking with the nursing in the bath, I would not have thought of that!

@MrsMccarthy: you're doing so well and you're so strong! Dd is sick and I feel like I'm losing it solo parenting... makes me want to keep her in a bubble!!
Do you make him get back in bed or just wait and see?
