LO will be turning 1 next week (yay!) and i'm wondering how did you ladies transition to whole cows milk (or milk alternative)?
how does your LO drink milk? do i use the same bottle as i did for breastmilk? or should he drink it from a straw cup?

We started slowly cutting her bm with whole cow's milk in her bottle. I didn't want to make two drastic changes at once. Once she was OK with cow's milk I made the change to a straw cup. Now she mainly drinks out of a open cup.

@locavore_mama: so you would combine the BM and cows milk into one bottle? i wonder what that tastes like...lol

We switched to a straw cup first around 11 months as LO was never really attached to the bottle. Then we gradually mixed the bm and wm too , I think we did 25/75, then 50/50, then 75/25 the other way based on how much pumped milk I had stored. We did it right after Christmas last year. I was worried to but it really went smoothly for us.

We started slowly cutting in cow's milk also - first 25% milk, then 50% and so on in his bottle. Once we were on whole milk for a few weeks, to make sure he doesn't have any reactions, then we bottle weaned.

@locavore_mama: @MamaCate: @MamaChin: did you still warm the bm/wm combo? and gradually just give it to your LO cold?

@butterbean: daycare did. But I should mention we let daycare did the transitioning. While we were home during that transition period I would still nurse then give cow's milk cold, as is. She actually wasn't drinking much straight up cow's milk at the beginning. But I started putting ice cubes in them and she drank so much more, especially from a open cup. So I found that she likes her cow's milk cold like me!

@butterbean: it was cold. it was at daycare and she was already in the toddler room where they do not warm drinks.

@butterbean: Great question, we will be transitioning soon and DS does NOT like to drink from straw/sippys so I was wondering the same thing. Also, DS turns 1 next week too, when is your LO's birthday??

Aw, Christmas baby! DS turns 1 on the 28th. I *just* barely squeaked through Christmas and was admitted on the 26th last year

We started slowly giving him almond milk (he's also tried hemp, cow, coconut). at 11.5 months at our pedi's rec... we gave it to him in a straw cup or reg cup with assistance since he'd been taking breast milk that way for a while.
by 1 year 3 days we were done nursing and he was taking in almond + frozen bm...
he's almost 13 months now and is 100% on almond milk.

My son always got a bedtime bottle of BM so we started mixing at around 11 months. By the time he was a year he was getting 100% cow's milk in his bottle.
During the day though, he refused to drink milk of any kind and we only offered it in a straw or sippy cup. We just kept offering and never pressured him to drink it. It took him a few weeks to 'get it' and he started drinking a lot more milk during the day around 12.5 months. (We weaned right at a year)

We started offering cold WCM in a sippy or straw cup at about 9 months. WCM was always offered at meals and was in addition to nursing/BM bottles. DD has slowly gained interest and will now sometimes drink 1-2 ounces of WCM with meals. She much prefers a straw to a sippy, so now we exclusively use straws for WCM, sippies for water. She is now almost 11 months, and after the holidays I plan to really ramp up my offering of WCM and will offer it after nursing in the hopes she will get the clue that they are related. I would like to have her transition to cold WCM in a cup during the day by 12 months. I plan to continue to nurse at wake up and bedtime.

We warmed it up in the bottle but now he drinks it from a straw cup cold.

At home we gave him 1-2oz in a sippy or straw cup (we experimented with different cups at that time) just at dinner to give him some exposure/see his reaction. Over the course of a week or two I mixed cows milk with breast milk for his daycare bottle (he was down to one). Daycare also offered milk in open cups at meals. After those few weeks, we cut the bottle all together.
We still nursed when we were together, so I didn't stress about milk amounts. He's almost 15 months now & we nurse sometimes, but he drinks a lot of cow's milk these days!

We've only been doing this for 5 days but we started with WCM cold turkey in a straw cup. At first she didn't want to drink much so I let her have it in a bottle and she gulped it down. Since Saturday, we've transitioned to milk in straw cups at breakfast and lunch and a last one after dinner/before bed. Tonight's the first night I didn't offer the bottle at all and she drank the majority of milk. One thing - we're dealing with constipation and I feel so sad for her every time she goes to the bathroom.

DS is 1 tomorrow! Ahhhhhhhh
He went on boob strike a month and a half ago, so I've been giving him pumped milk mixed with cow and almond milk since. I put it in a regular cup and he drinks from a straw. He takes cow's milk straight without a problem now.

We transitioned slowly because M was MSPI and our GI doc wanted to make sure that she would tolerate it. We substituted one ounce of cows milk for one ounce of formula per bottle each day, if that makes sense. She had no problem with it and I think it was helpful to do it slowly. Doing it gradually also helped with the temperature issue. We just added the cows milk cold and by the end of the week she was used to cold bottles!
We didn't transition to sippies for another month or so. The sippy cup transition was harder (she cut down her milk intake like crazy) than the transition from formula to WCM.
