DS is 21 months old and I am due with his little sister in October. I was thinking now would be the perfect time to get him into a big boy bed, so we could use the crib for the baby. My husband and I are a little perplexed about how to do this and whether to buy a toddler bed or a proper twin bed.

How did everyone go about this? Did you put the mattress on the floor at first or use bed rails? For people who bought toddler beds, how long did your child stay in it? Did you think it was a good purchase? Toddler beds are just much cheaper than regular beds, but I don't want to buy a piece of furniture that will be useless in a year or two.
