Have you bought a used breast pump? Would you?
I'm considering getting a Medela double electric pump and thinking of buying used just because they are so pricey. Wishing I just got the double the first time around instead of the single.

I wouldn't buy a Medela used, because it's not a closed system. I miiiight would get one from a close friend or family member. Maybe.
I think Hygeia pumps are closed systems?
You've checked with your insurance, yes?

@allison: What is a closed system?
I haven't called my insurance myself, yet. But, a cousin just had a baby and showed me the one they gave her (she has the same insurance) and it's pretty crappy and she really hates it. I don't remember the brand, but it's something cheap-y.

My SIL offered me her medela, but it's not a closed system pump, so it eeked me out. If it was a closed system pump like an Ameda then I would have been fine.
Have you checked with your insurance? Most of the time pumps are covered now, so you might be able to get a free one.

No, I really wouldnt. It's one of my things I wouldn't buy used.

@Boogs: You might be able to choose which pump you get. I was able to. But I know all insurance companies are different.
Here's a LLL link that explains the different types of pumps: http://www.llli.org/llleaderweb/lv/lvjunjul04p54.html

@allison: @LemonLong: We need to call them about something else, so I'll check. Thank you!
@loveisstrange: I know, it kinda grosses me out. Just didn't know if there was a way to keep things completely sanitary.

@Boogs: If it's a closed system, you can purchase new flanges and tubes and it is completely sanitary. If it's an open system, there is no way to truly sanitize it. I might use one from a close friend or family member that I knew was clean and disease free, but I would never buy from a stranger with an open system.

@Boogs: I have a used Medela Freestyle that I got from a friend of a friend in my mommy group. I read all about the open/closed systems and then read about the risks of infectious disease that can be passed through breastmilk and just found that it was very, very unlikely.
In any case, I knew the girl well enough to trust her when she said she didn't have HUV or any of the Hep strains, so I was fine with it. I use it every day.

@Boogs: yes definitely check with your insurance, since I think a lot have updated what they cover very recently. If it's just a crappy one, you could check craigslist. My local CL has a ton of new medela double electric pumps that people got from their insurance and sold. You may be able to find one completely unused and unopened. That's the only way I'd buy one used, though I would use my sisters without concern.

I have a used Ameda that I bought from a friend. It it was an open system, I would not consider it.

@Foodnerd81: They are closed already for the weekend, but we are checking next week! And started looking on CL, definitely better prices than the stores for ones sealed in boxes still!

I used my SIL's Medela pump with LO and will use it again for our next one. I got new tubing for it. It works great for being from 2007.

Nope. My cousin offered me her used pump and I wasn't comfortable with that.

I used my SILs medela and felt totally comfortable doing that. I bought new tubing.

I was given a friend's Medela with new tubes and didn't have any qualms about it.

I absolutely would. Everything that touches skin and holds milk can be sterilized, and the miniscule chance of a tiny amount of milk getting into the pump and then back out again is not even on my radar.
