How old was your LO when you started/switched to regular oatmeal/porridge etc? And please let me know if you were either BLW or the traditional cereal/puree group, and how old LO was when you started solids.

P was around 8 mths old when I tried regular oatmeal (she was wheat intolerant & our stores don't sell GF baby cereal). She didn't really eat any solids until after 9 months though.... We did a combo of blw & purées.

We started with homemade purees (roasted butternut squash) around 1 week shy of 6 months. At around 7.5 months we moved on to BLW. Somewhere there abouts I made her oatmeal from steel cut oats. Just used a coffee grinder to grind it into oatmeal powder. Approximately 1/4c powder to 1 cup liquid ratio. Works the same for brown rice powder as well.

We have to thicken LOs formula due to reflux, and we use oatmeal instead of rice to avoid constipation. We haven't yet, but are planning on usin steel cut oats and blending them into a powder.

I've used both the rolled and steel cut oats for my son's oatmeal. I used to process the rolled into a powder so it would cook quickly, but there's really no need to even do that if it was cooked well.

@regberadaisy: great tip about the coffee grinder!
@looch: How did you cook it? I'd like to keep using breast milk to make it, but I don't want to microwave it, and i'm not sure about heating it on the stove.
LO is almost seven months, so I don't think I'm supposed to use cow's milk yet.

@bamblm: I never had extra breast milk so I just used water. And stove top!

@bamblm: I have never prepared oatmeal in the microwave, always stovetop. I always prepared it with water, but sometimes I would add a splash of cows milk after it had cooled a bit to thin it out. I assume you could use the BM here, after it's cooled.
I also always mix with fruit, usually a banana and berries.

We skipped rice cereal and started with baby oatmeal at 5 mths, mixed with either BM or formula.

@runsyellowlites: how did you find out P was wheat intolerant? did she have a reaction like hives?? I'm curious because I'm cautiously giving LO wheat early on - I have Celiac disease and am 100% gluten free, hoping he isn't though!
@bamblm: it's funny you ask this - i was making oatmeal this morning and wondering when i could give it to him... we still use the powdered stuff.

@bamblm: LO was 6 months exactly when we started solids with homemade purees (started with avocado and sweet potato). We did a mix of BLW and purees. In the beginning with oatmeal I'd grind up my steel cut oats in the baby bullet and make hers on the stovetop with water. I would separate the oatmeal into individual containers and add breast milk right before feeding it to her. I stopped grinding the oatmeal at about 8 months.

@hellobeeboston: She had green mucousy stool & a rash that didn't resolve until I cut it out.
