My hospital doesn't allow any visitors during or after birth, thank goodness! So ppl around here don't expect to visit at the hospital ... but once home, that's another story because I heard they expect to fika (coffee & pastries)!

our hospital has crazy tight security-- you have to get a photo badge made to even get access to the labor/delivery and postpartum floors. And like your hospital, no non-sibling child visitors. But somehow kid visitors got through anyway-- and we got through with Wagon Jr. when he was a baby too, to visit another new baby. Maybe because we were all asian, they assumed we were all family We didn't mind because we had a pretty open door policy with visitors. We got so many, we were the talk of the floor.

Stick to your guns about the policy... there's no need for an 8 year old ADHD kid jumping all about your room with you in recovery and a newborn sleeping. What if he busts in when you're trying to nurse for the first time? He can stay with a sitter or his dad when your sister visits, and he can see the baby when you get home.

@MaisyMay: Yuck. I'm sorry you have to deal with that. We are still choosing a hospital so I'm not sure of the policy. But why on Earth would she question you?? And honestly, even if that wasn't a policy but was just your personal choice not to have your nephew there, she should respect that!! I would think any one would understand not wanting a 4 year old child and their germs and their craziness around a new born baby.

I plan on (depending on the time of day) allowing our immediate families to visit us the day of the delivery. We will welcome friends/extended family after that. If there is a complication or our baby needs extra attention then only immediate family will be allowed and we will allow other visitors once we are home and settled.

If I'm feeling overwelmed or tired we will ask people to leave...I'm okay with that!

Our hospital also doesn't allow non sibling children. They told them my niece was my daughter so she could come in, which didn't bother me at all. She is 6, and I figured if she didn't come then we'd just see her in a day or two anyway, and it was important to DH that she come. We also had a 2 year old visit. They weren't supposed to, but she managed to sneak in the room. Again, I didn't mind.
