Did you actively wean your child or did they self wean? What age? If you still have a breastfeeding child, what age are you hoping they wean?

Both mine self-weaned. My oldest weaned at 14.5 months when I was pregnant with #2. And then my youngest weaned at 12.5 months when he had a double ear infection and went on a nursing strike that we never recovered from.

Um, a little of both? We were down to one session a day around 12 months (first thing in the morning when she woke up). It was short, and I didn't have a huge supply once I stopped pumping. At that point, I think we were nursing mostly for me because she would have been fine without it.
Anyway, I got pregnant when she was almost 14 months old and dried up pretty quickly. When I didn't offer one morning and went straight to breakfast, she was completely fine. There was only one time she ever tried to nurse again (she reached at my PJ shirt one morning when she was hanging out in bed with us after we got her out of her crib) and I just told her the milk wasn't there anymore, it was in her cup now. She never looked back.

Both.
At a year he wasn't overly interested during the day so that was an easy drop (and allowed me to quit pumping at work).
Gradually his after-work/daycare session got later and later till he was fine without it.
The last session we dropped was before bed, and we offered a bottle instead, he didn't seem to miss it.
I 'quit' at 14 months, nursed once more a week later just b/c I was full, and that was it. Pretty easy.

I weaned my daughter. I think she would still be nursing now, but she was totally great with weaning! I weaned her at 13.5 months because we wanted to start TTC.

My oldest self weaned at 13 months when I was newly pregnant with his brother. He just wasn't interested anymore, so it was a gradual thing over about a month. LO2 is now 12.5 months and we may continue for a few more months, but he's definitely not nursing as much as he was even a month ago.

It was mutual the week she turned one. She refused I stopped offering. Worked for everyone

after each of my LO's turned 1, i wanted to wean. with my first, i got mastitis and abruptly cut off nursing because i didn't want the antibiotics to get into LO1's system. that was a bit more sudden than i had intended. for LO2, i first cut down to wakeup and bedtime nursing, then just wakeup nursing, and then cut that out too. the process took a few weeks and was more gentle on both of us. i didn't notice any struggles on his part, and didn't feel like i was taking something away from him that he wanted.

Actively weaned my first cold turkey on her third birthday. I never imagined going that long but it happened. With LO2 I'd be happier if he weans closer to age 2, but we'll see where it goes (he's not quite 5 months now). If he's like his sister I may be more active in weaning him sooner.

My 10.5 month old is sort of self-weaning at this point.... he can't really be bothered to nurse in the morning or during the day - the only time he is really into it is falling asleep while nursing at bedtime... I'm cutting back to pumping only 1x a day now, and will probably stop nursing in the morning and give him milk at a year and i'll keep up the night time nursing as long as I have milk. with my first I dried up pretty soon after I stopped pumping......

I actively weaned mine at 25mo. I got pregnant when she was 23mo and didn't want to tandem nurse plus it started hurting really bad.

My big girl self-weaned at 3y3m after a gentle nudge in that direction from me and my little guy is still happily nursing 4-5 times a day at 17 months.

My 13 month old seems more into nursing than ever, but I want to start weaning. I did stop pumping during the 6 hours she's at daycare a day because she started refusing a bottle.

My son is almost 20 months and nursing very frequently. When we are home, he basically wants to nurse all evening like snacking! I want to start really keeping it at bedtime, morning, and nap time but it's hard unless we are out of the house. Starting at 2, I plan to really enforce the set times and no more night nursing. We tried night weaning a few months ago, and he was doing pretty well but I have trouble enforcing it in those early morning hours. I have him sleeping in his own room now with the hope he will start naturally sleeping longer and longer! I would like to be done by 2.5 but we will see. My husband would love me to quit cold turkey.

@Alivoo01: I know this is a super old post....but I’m curious how you weaned at one year (including MOTN comfort feeds)?? I don’t mind when he’s sick but now he’s completely fine but a reincarnated boob monster at night & it’s killing my sleep! He likes to cosleep too so it’s just on tap whenever daytime feeds are nearly down to morning and midday, plus pre-bed.
Any wisdom on gentle weaning from anyone would be much appreciated. LO takes no bottles and isn’t averse to milk but just hasn’t had much. Loves water but not as much as Mother’s milk! First LO self weaned so this is completely new.

@Nutella: I had to do it cold turkey in the MOTN comfort nursing. He’d be rooting for me and I’d have to either turn the other way or straight up deny him. It was a rough two weeks that’s for sure! First week was definitely the hardest. Second week was more of a re-enforcer. We also took the opportunity to wean him off bottles and introduce him to sippy cups and straw cups.
